(it's important not to erase that she's trans because she spoke very clearly about wanting to contribute to trans visibility)

Why have you decided to go on the record now as being trans? Trans visibility is important. People have ideas about who trans people are, and I think that it’s best to broaden that. Maybe I’m also hoping that people who think that trans people are “less” than cisgender people might find themselves questioning that. The other thing is that it’s good for trans people to know that they’re not alone. I think that part of what helps trans people realize that they’re trans is to know that there are more options for who you can be as a trans person. That’s important to me.

Excellent statement here from the Scottish Human Rights Commission (SHRC), doing what the EHRC should have been doing all along. This shows how way off track our biased EHRC are. www.scottishhumanrights.com/media/3044/p...

We know that many people are concerned about how their rights are going to be protected and upheld. We are concerned that basic rights to dignity and respect for all may be undermined. It is our view that the judgment itself does not directly violate any human rights. However, the interpretation of this judgment and the resulting changes in policy, public discourse and the behaviour of duty-bearers are highly likely to have an impact on the rights of people in Scotland. Our role as Scotland's national independent human rights institution (NHRI) is to promote awareness, understanding of, and respect for human rights. This includes the fundamental rights and freedoms for us all as contained within the European Convention on Human Rights and treaties which are binding on the UK. Our general duty also requires us to encourage best practice in relation to human rights. This means providing independent advice on the status of rights in law, including to the Scottish Parliament and public authorities. 0131 297 5750 | hello@scottishhumanrights.com | www.scottishhumanrights.com | Scottish Human Rights Commission, Bridgeside House, 99 McDonald Road, Edinburgh, EH7 4NS 2 We recognise that what the definition of 'sex' in the Equality Act 2010 means for the rights of different groups has been contentious. What is not debatable is that the rights of all must be respected, protected, and fulfilled. As Lord Hodge said when handing down the judgment, this ruling is not to be regarded as a 'triumph' of one set of rights over another. Any developments in law, policy and practice that result from this judgment must be human rights compliant. This is a legal requirement. However, human rights are not something which exist only in law. They manifest in different ways in people's everyday lives, and there has been a failure to recognise this in some of the response to the judgment. The Equality Act 2010 does not exist in isolation, and it must be applied in line with the requirements of the Human Rights Act 1998 and the international human rights framework. Taking a narrow lens to compliance with only one piece of legislation may risk non-compliance with human rights standards. A holistic approach to human rights compliance often requires striking an appropriate balance between different rights, needs and protections and is a normal part of a human-rights based approach. For example, the right to freedom of expression must be balanced with the need to protect people from harassment.

technically team gb also boycotted, so she won that medal under the olympic flag as well - it's just unlike canada and the us, the uk gave individual sports bodies the option to send people who wanted to go (just not as team gb)

you heard it here first: feminism is killing everything good and holy about british culture. ladies, back in the kitchen or you'll be responsible for societal collapse in the form of pudding extinction

Hann waxed lyrical about the sort of puddings his mother would make. “She regularly produced a delicious pudding after the main course – things like steamed sponge pudding with coming out of a pudding basin with the syrup dribbling down the side. There was a whole repertoire of delicious puddings. People are not generally making these sort of hot desserts but turning to things like ice-cream, yoghurts or fruit.”

why isn't everyone like my sainted mummy, staying home to steam a pudding for several hours with every meal

what made sugar more widely available, hmm? wouldn't be empire and slavery would it?

Hann said puddings were once a luxury for the well-off but as sugar became more widely available, more people could enjoy them. The 20th century was probably the heyday of the British pudding.

ok not to do Discourse on an objectively silly puff piece but i actually find this quite sinister the whole thing is some guy from english heritage praising the emergence of widely available sugar and bemoaning the loss of mums spending hours cooking puddings
