That's only (so far) true for the generational flagship games. Plenty of other Pokemon games experiment with playstyle; the Legends series in part seems to be explicitly about experimenting with battling. Turn-based isn't the most popular thing and GF seems interested in changing or dropping it.

I really like the effect of the "distortions" in the event. It helped relieve some of the boredom in spawns I felt with the party hats and first partners in the previous event. Hopefully they do something similar with Eternatus, with wild max mons like in SWSH. Just as a change of pace.

As a more firm suggestion, I'd say try running a one-shot intro in another system like Kids on Bikes/Brooms (focuses on collaborative storytelling and inclusivity, plenty of dice rolling, tighter math, and exploding die crits that always delight). You can adjust systems or even homebrew from there.
As an anecdotal example, my ADHD kid has near zero interest in the executive part of having a character or tracking various +1s and +2s. Higher narrative games work best with them. D&D or Pathfinder are right out. They might enjoy Daggerheart, but that's pushing it. Obviously everyone is different.
Playing (ruleless) pretend is something every kid does, which is why I suggest starting with something more narrative driven. D&D is a very crunchy system that can get overwhelming. Starting with narrative lets you more easily find a system that works for all your kids.
