We refused to sell F-35s to our close ally Turkey, just because they decided to buy the Russian S-400. And now Trump comes in and says we'll sell F-35s to India, which not only operates S-300 and S-400, but also directly has joint air-defence programs with Russia.
Bartek Ogryczak (@vartec.bsky.social) reply parent
Away from the US? India was never a US ally, they were the Soviet Union and are Russia ally. 70% of their military hardware imports are Soviet/Russian. The locally produced hardware are joint India-Russia programs. Quite the opposite, Trump fucked up when he said he'd sell F-35s to India.

These tests were designed for screening kids with learning disabilities, so they can get extra help. They were never designed to identify geniuses. It's kinda like a certain politician who brags that he “aced” a screening test for brain damage.
Bartek Ogryczak (@vartec.bsky.social) reply parent
It's a low-intelligence aligned behavior. All you need to know about how good these tests are at measuring actual intelligence is the fact that people who obsess with them and practice these puzzles daily can boost their score 20 or more points, while not actually being 20% smarter.

London, Ohio maybe. London, England has murder rate of 1.3 per 100k (which they present as 13.1 per 1M, so I see how it could be confusing). That's four times less than San Francisco.
Bartek Ogryczak (@vartec.bsky.social) reply parent
Eh? 2024 for Lichtenstein is 2.6, which was literally *one* murder (total population is 40k). First murder they had in 10 years. Greenland population is 56k, so that 5.3 is literally 3 homicides. Coincidently both are used as examples of how useless statistics are with small sample size.
Bartek Ogryczak (@vartec.bsky.social) reply parent
It's more like: if you're Asian, Australian, Canadian or European, should you be wary of visiting the US? Absolutely. I don't think the counterpoint to Republican induced panic should be pretending like crime is something normal. It's not. We can do better.

re TSMC, it already has a fab in Arizona, and it's expanding to two more. I still don't think the DoD would be to eager to put a TSMC manufactured chip in let's say a B-21.

Micron doesn't make microprocessors, they make RAM and SSDs. They have only one fab, which uses 25nm process. Texas Instruments specializes in analog signal processors and sensors for military hardware and embedded chips. They don't make any microprocessors. 45nm - 300 nm process.

Cool, name one American owned company that manufactures advanced chips, and isn't Intel. I give you some hints: - TSMC as the name indicates is Taiwanese - Nvidia doesn't fab - AMD doesn't fab, they sold Global Foundries to Saudis - Samsung is Korean - Hynix is Korean too

Bartek Ogryczak (@vartec.bsky.social) reply parent
On the older processes Intel's yields are 30-50% less than TSMCs. Lower yields translate directly to higher costs. Literally the only thing Intel got going for it is the fact that it's the last big American owned chip manufacturer. Nvidia doesn't fab, Global Foundries was sold to Saudis.
Bartek Ogryczak (@vartec.bsky.social) reply parent
And here's the kicker, the Intel 18A prototypes they've shown are... ...ARM chips. So Intel's future is just being a smaller, less capable, and more expensive TSMC. Intel bailout is a hedge against the invasion of Taiwan, which if happens, then it's expected in fall 2027.
Bartek Ogryczak (@vartec.bsky.social) reply parent
No they don't. They hit a wall in 2016, can't move beyond 10nm (despite desperate moves like rebranding it to “Intel 7nm”). They're so bad at chip manufacturing, their recent CPUs were made by... TSMC. Now they're touting Intel 18A, but haven't yet demonstrated they can manufacture that at scale.
Bartek Ogryczak (@vartec.bsky.social) reply parent
It's not a business decision, it's a national security decision, and I doubt he made it. It's a bailout for one of a very few US chip manufacturers, when chips are a strategic resource with direct military applications. Will it work out? I doubt it will save Intel as a commercial entity...
Bartek Ogryczak (@vartec.bsky.social) reply parent
Two problems with this idea is that ARM is British, so obviously can't be owned by the US government. Also ARM doesn't make any chips, they just design them and license the IP.
Bartek Ogryczak (@vartec.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't get why it's being painted as “the government taking over a profitable company”. It's a bailout, Intel is on the verge of bankruptcy.

American journalists are no longer interested in reporting reality, but rather fomenting the polarization for the clicks. Biased reporting created engagement, support from one side, rage-clicks from the other. Balanced, truthful reporting just doesn't sell in America.

Obama tried to push for denial of entry based on “right-wing extremism”, which is more politically charged than generic “anti-American extremism”. Though Obama did backtrack after a backlash. A big issue with immigration policy is that in large part it's not regulated by law, but by random memos.
