The first time I made money was in the 3rd grade, when I used a wire brush to scrape creosote off railroad ties to be used as fence posts. I was paid 25¢ (silver) / tie and earned every cent. My first 'real' job was at a cable car tourist attraction, where I worked all positions except management.

More sad news for the polar community... Arctic Research Consortium of the United States (@arcus-arctic.bsky.social) is shutting down. We all lose here. The past 8 months have been unthinkable, and their consequences for the future even more so.

Screenshot from the ARCUS August 2025 newsletter: Dear ARCUS Community, It is with a mix of gratitude and sadness for our community that we share an important update about ARCUS’s future. After more than three decades of connecting, supporting, and facilitating collaboration within the U.S. Arctic research community, ARCUS will sunset its operations at the end of September 2025 and formally dissolve as a nonprofit organization. This decision comes after careful consideration and reflection on the changing needs of the Arctic research landscape. While ARCUS as an institution will close, the impact of the relationships, collaborations, and shared work we have fostered will continue to ripple through the community for years to come. We are profoundly grateful for the many individuals—past and present—who have served on our Board, worked on our staff, contributed as partners, and supported ARCUS’s mission with passion and dedication. We want to assure you that we remain active and committed right up to the end

Nodules on the seafloor have growth rings like trees which can be tied to the paleoclimate and ocean chemistry over tens of millions of years is such a wild, cool thing.

When they say, "God has a plan", realize that in their cult, the words God and Trump are synonymous. Never mind that the 'plan' was written by the Heritage Foundation and other anti-USA groups. They can overlook that, so long as the plan includes hating the 'others' that they also hate.

I see very little of it. I don't follow people who enjoy posting/reposting it, and make liberal use of the nuclear block.

Considering that two historic storms capable of overtopping the levee system have already hit the city, and climate change makes the strongest hurricanes stronger and raises sea levels, it’s a matter of time before New Orleans sees the “Big One” that will overtop the city’s levees. What then?

And which administration is all gung-ho for deep-sea polymetallic nodule mining while the rest of the world urges caution? Oblivious to the certain long-term environmental damage and how far-reaching it may be. RFKJ doesn't give a flying fig about whales, or any other living thing, not even humans.

My puzzlement was over your DDG browser and DDG video player. From my perspective, I see no need for separate apps to browse and watch videos, as Firefox already does both, and has an integral ad blocker. To be perfectly clear, I use DDG multiple times per hour; it's my go-to search engine.

Ads aren't my #1 beef with YT. You must be talking about smartphone apps, and I don't own one... I wouldn't watch videos on a palm-sized screen if I did. DDG's video player?? DDG browser?? Eh?? I use DDG and watch videos every day, but I don't have a DDG 'video player' or browser; I use Firefox.

I'm a channel owner, so I'm almost always logged in, and I don't see what you've described. My biggest gripe about them (aside from their Google ownership) is their relentless push for vertical videos, which I loathe. I see Vimeo as an alternative, but it doesn't have as many viewers as YouTube.

The screwworm was successfully eradicated in the USA 60 years ago by the introduction of sterile male flies. Currently, the biggest threat is to food security (infected cattle). The sterile male strategy is being employed again on a large scale as they spread northward through Mexico. No panic yet.

It may not be much, but for one, you can immediately stop using their search engine. There are multiple, BETTER, options available. I recommend making your final Google search, [alternatives to google]. My choice from the responses back in the early 2010s was duckduckgo, alternatively Ecosia.
