Iām starting to get the feeling that some people (NOT ERIN) need to believe theyāre living through special times, and yet another fascist regime playing out yet another eugenicist agenda just doesnāt feel special ENOUGH, so itās gotta be something deeper, something past the edge of human reason.

It's meant to communicate and manufacture consent. It's not just about me, it is about how readers will interpret those words and internalize the logic. When someone says something is "Unexpected" in a headline from a propaganda rag owned by a billionaire, the people who expected it are marginalized
velociraptor jones (@velociraptorj.bsky.social) reply parent
I think it's disgusting to use weasel words to manufacture consent and subtly diminish opposition. Yes, it's disgusting. Yes, it's propaganda. Being told what I think is disgusting. It feels disgusting, and feelings do matter, and are necessarily real. It's disgusting because I am disgusted by it.

Not sure whose fault it is primarily that most people don't seem to know that the president is basically a manager whose job is to carry out the will of Congress, and not The Country's Boss
velociraptor jones (@velociraptorj.bsky.social) reply parent
"If you read the article, you'd note that several paragraphs below the headline, I gave a few unexpected freaks a sentence or two at the bottom of the article." As if we don't learn in journalism education that the most important information should be prioritized at the beginning of the article. Hm!
velociraptor jones (@velociraptorj.bsky.social) reply parent
"Unintentional!" "Unexpected" "Accidentally!" As if you have secret knowledge about their intent. Disgusting. Biased. Horrible writing. We're just supposed to assume good faith. This type of writing justifies wars and manufactures consent. Unexpected!
velociraptor jones (@velociraptorj.bsky.social) reply parent
It's a clear sign of media bias in a smiling package. A lot of people are not aware of when labels are being applied to the reader. If you expected this, you were wrong, you never existed, you don't count, EVERYONE thought this was a good idea, which makes the obviously terrible outcome UNEXPECTED!š¤Ŗ
velociraptor jones (@velociraptorj.bsky.social) reply parent
In fact, this irks me so much that it reminds me of the work of @ahjohnson.bsky.social who notes when mainstream outlets say the US "Accidentally stumbles" into oppressive, genocidal wars. Whoops! NO ONE could have expected this! It's scary because it implies that everyone who DID isn't human.
velociraptor jones (@velociraptorj.bsky.social) reply parent
That's coming next in the US, but writers like Drew are paving the way for it here by using weaselly adjectives like "Unexpected", which intentionally diminish the opposition to this.
velociraptor jones (@velociraptorj.bsky.social) reply parent
It's designed to create the bias that the people who oppose this are a small ignorable minority, or don't exist at all, through the use of the word "Unexpected". This was expected by everyone who researched this!
velociraptor jones (@velociraptorj.bsky.social) reply parent
Placing the word "Unexpected" here is TERRIBLE writing. Wow. Really dismissive and disgusting. I, and all my friends, and thousands of others, expected this. Nope! It was unexpected, actually. I guess we never existed. Terrifying phrasing on Drew's part, especially in this political environment.
