The cool thing about a White House announcement these days is that it’s either they took the woke out of Cheetos or we just invaded Venezuela. No in between. I’d love to hear something about Trump more directly but I’m convinced the news we’re all waiting for will just happen without warning.

This was incredible, important lawyering from National Immigration Law Center (@nilc.org) over the past 24 hours. Here's their case page: www.nilc.org/litigation/l... Here was the statement from Efrén Olivares, NILC VP of litigation, from earlier today regarding the TRO:

“In the dead of night on a holiday weekend, the Trump administration ripped vulnerable, frightened children from their beds and attempted to return them to danger in Guatemala. We are heartened the Court prevented this injustice from occurring before hundreds of children suffered irreparable harm. We are determined to continue fighting to protect the interest of our plaintiffs and all class members until the effort is enjoined permanently.”

The most compact, informative, and useful introduction to the Philosophy and Sociology of Science remains Kovar (2001), “Electron Band Structure in Germanium, My Ass”.

Electron Band Structure in Germanium, My Ass Lucas Kovar University of Wisconsin, Madison 2001* Abstract The exponential dependence of resistivity on temperature in germanium is found to be a great big lie. My careful theoretical modeling and painstaking experimentation reveal 1) that my equipment is crap, as are all the available texts on the subject and 2) that this whole exercise was a complete waste of my time. Introduction Electrons in germanium are confined to well-defined energy bands that are separated by Figure 1: Check this shit out. Once the wires were in place, I attached them as appropriate to the second-rate equipment I scavenged from the back of the lab, none of which worked properly. I soon wised up and swiped replacements from the well-stocked research labs. This is how they treat undergrads around here: they give you broken tools and then don't understand why you don't get any results. In order to control the temperature of the germanium, I attached the crystal to a copper rod, the upper end of which was attached to a heating coil and the lower end of which was dipped in a thermos of liquid nitrogen. Midway through the project, the thermos began leaking. That's right: I pay a cool ten grand a quarter to come here, and yet they can't spare the five bucks to ensure that I have a working thermos. Results Check this shit out (Fig 1). That's bonafide, 100%-real data, my friends. I took it myself over the course of two weeks. And this was not a leisurely two weeks, either; I busted my ass day and night in order to provide you with nothing but the best data possible. Now, let's look a bit more closely at this data, remembering that it is absolutely first-rate. Do you see the exponential dependence? I sure don't. I see a bunch of crap. Christ, this was such a waste of my time. Banking on my hopes that whoever grades this will just look at the pictures, I drew an exponential through my noise. I believe the apparent legitimacy is enhanced by the fact that I used a complicated computer program to make the fit. I understand this is the same process by which the top quark was discovered.

I know I’m supposed to be thinking about which Muppet’s special interest I’m willing to hear about for four hours but I’m a single-issue seat voter and therefore pick 4, which is surrounded by short Muppets and has no one behind it.

I see it, but as a tall guy, “last row and behind Sweetums” is right out.

About 9 for our oldest. Would have been <1 for the youngest, so YMMV as ever.

Like, I understand the use cases and appreciate the capabilities, but using a tool that has a “just talk to it” API and that uses it to constantly lie to me is pretty annoying!

I was playing with this a bit last night, and yeah, “don’t lie to me about what you ‘did’ and use an algorithm to solve a problem when appropriate” is very hard for it to stick to!

I guess now we know how Sam Altman thinks it would feel to talk to a PhD-level expert in any topic. “Yes, you’re absolutely right! I did get that one wrong. Would you like me instead to elaborate on how clever I found your question?”

Charging once for hardware that works is just not a good long term business model compared to charging monthly for software that doesn’t

Trying not to get nerd-sniped matching models to ex-physicists; fortunately I don’t know the former well enough to make a serious go at it. Best case seems to be Stephen Wolfram: mostly right, full of annoying stylistic tics, and somehow completely ignorant of the primary sources.

I think Altman assumes that “PhD-level expert” means someone who speaks confidently on everything as opposed to saying “it’s nuanced,” losing their keys, and getting maniacally fixated on their current topic to the point of seeing it in everything.
