Idk about that per say. Most sets bring something to the table overall; the 2 sets mentioned just felt like bad cosplay in comparison. At least Ikoria brought in fun mechanics. I know not everyone loves Mutate, but when used in tandem with things like Yarok (the desecrated) it starts to shine.
Karlov Manor and Thunder junction are VASTLY worse then Ikoria imo

First off: Mad respect. Second (unsolicited advice lol): Maybe try a color combo? OR what I usually do (mainly a Red/Blue izzet player) is go the opposite colors. Recently Ive been having a ton of fun with it, building a few Black/Green or Blue/Black/Green decks to swing the spectrum a bit😄
