Oh I have incredibly little space. But taking one weekend day to do nothing (or very little) and one week off once a quarter is probably more doable than you think. The tough one for me honestly is the one hour per day; the weekdays are a blur with hardly any down time at all.
Richard Waite (@waiterich.bsky.social) reply parent
These are minimums. But if Iām starting to feel run down or stressed out, itās often because Iāve started breaking one or more of these rules

Yes, because people & animals (that people eat) can eat soy, & global soy demand is rising. So if we divert some soy to biofuel, we need to increase soy production somewhere else to feed the people and animals. And increasing soy elsewhere causes deforestation which causes land use change emissions.
Richard Waite (@waiterich.bsky.social) reply parent
600 million hectares is nearly twice the size of India.
Richard Waite (@waiterich.bsky.social) reply parent
BTW thereās a potential big growth market for biofuels from sectors like aviation. We estimate that if just 1/4 of aviation fuel in 2050 came from veg oil based biofuels like soy, global veg oil production would need to TRIPLE, and ag would need to expand by 600 Mha - disaster for forests & climate.

Richard Waite (@waiterich.bsky.social) reply parent
But yes those arenāt the food-grade soybeans used for edamame and tofu.
Richard Waite (@waiterich.bsky.social) reply parent
Also, the feed-grade soybeans are processed into soybean meal (80% of the bean) for animal feed, & soybean oil (20% of the bean). This oil is then refined into edible (by humans) oil, or used for industrial purposes like biofuel. So there is human food (oil) that comes from the feed-grade soybeans.
Richard Waite (@waiterich.bsky.social) reply parent
US policy this year has been to EXPAND domestic biofuel production to the point that USDA expects MORE THAN HALF of our soybean oil to be burned as biofuels next year (itās been >40% recently). This of course is worse for climate than burning fossil fuels, but climate action isnāt the goal here.
