Government funding is the one card congressional Democrats have to play, and one they could and should use to push back against Trump's authoritarianism. What's their big demand? RFK Jr's resignation? Reforms in ICE? Stand down of National Guard? NOPE. "Obamacare enhanced premium tax credits"

Regardless of the disgraceful nonsense we will likely hear from this administration in the coming days on vaccine “recommendations,” Americas healthcare insurers issued a joint statement tonight saying coverage for Covid and flu shots will remain unchanged from prior years. Speaks for itself.

It turns out that when you’re staying at a Nevada casino-hotel, it’s important to ask “is my room immediately next to a huge neon sign?”

A hotel room window, the curtain closed. The curtain is glowing red, especially on the outside. The room is otherwise dark.

I have a vague hypothesis that I will feel more comfortable when traveling if I don’t smell like weird hotel soap and shampoo, so I was happy to find I could easily buy a 24-pack of these adorable little Dove bars. I bring a new one on each trip.

I have an even more radical dream: all new construction should be be fully accessible.

We've got no woodchucks out here in the forest, but we *do* have skunks, and I'd be happier not to find one under my office.

I hadn't thought about it for old-dog purposes, but that makes sense.

Unfortunately, our porch is too high for a ramp to be practical, but we've got plans drawn up to add on a downstairs bedroom and accessible bathroom, and that'll be on-grade, allowing a ramp.

It’s not Trex—just 5/4 deck boards.

I removed the painter’s tape and took another photo of the white-nosed steps 30 minutes after sunset. I think this is actually helpful to me now! It’s much easier to see the edges of these steps—before, they all just blended together into gray, when walking down them at night.

Looking down a short flight of gray steps, in dim light. The edge of each step is bright white.

I am not a reporter. I’m just a dude writing stuff on social media that is sometimes wrong because that’s how humans be.

Right right, Kirk was “prove me wrong.” But same deal: he goaded kids into debating him, but would never ever have said “oh, OK, I was wrong.”

“If you displease the regime then your business is taken away from you” is straight up, undiluted fascism.

I’ll give it to Higgins et al: their commitment to free speech is no different than Kirk’s was, which is to say that it’s a complete fiction.

Kirk didn’t debate out of some spirit of democracy or whatever. He did it to expand the Overton window, so that the humanity of marginalized groups could be seen as being up for debate. His “change my mind” schtick was a sham: he was never, ever willing to change his mind.

My wife and I had our home’s architect draw up plans for a downstairs bedroom and full bathroom. In the intervening decade we haven’t had the money to have the work done, and luckily haven’t needed it. But I hope to live long enough that stairs are a problem.
