What recommendation would you propose to make higher education more accessible for DC students?
3. Establish regional tuition agreements. Work with Maryland and Virginia to explore tuition reciprocity, where DC students could receive deeper discounts or qualify for in-state rates. These agreements exist across the country, why not here?
2. Adjust DCTAG for inflation. Go back to Congress to rewrite DCTAG legislation so that the grant amount is indexed to keep up with tuition inflation. Ensure there’s sustainable funding so DC students always know they have reliable support for college.
Here are three policy recommendations to consider: 1. Strengthen UDC’s appeal. The University of the District of Columbia has come a long way, but more should be done to make it an attractive option for DC students to stay local and pursue their education here in the city.
DC students really get the short end of the stick. We only have one public university in the District, compared to states that have multiple public options (and in-state tuition rates for residents).
For example, take our alma mater, University of Maryland. It’s right outside DC’s border, yet DC students pay out-of-state tuition—$41,974 for tuition alone and $62,374 including room, board, and other costs (2025-26 academic year). A $10K grant barely scratches the surface.
But college tuition has skyrocketed since then. Today, $10K doesn’t make nearly the same impact. The DCTAG allotment should’ve been adjusted over time to keep up with tuition inflation, but it hasn’t been.
This program was launched in the late ’90s, and at that time, $10K was enough to cover the difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition at many public universities, making college significantly more affordable for DC students.
FACT: DC students do NOT receive in-state tuition at public universities across the country. Instead, they can receive up to $10,000 per year from the DCTAG (DC Tuition Assistance Grant) program to help offset out-of-state tuition costs.
