If people will accept approval voting for primaries, but want more than two choices in the general, that is what we need to do for now. Because even if sub-optimal candidates then regularly win the general, they're still going to be better qualified than at least half the politicans elected today.

Profile picture Waurii (@waurii.bsky.social) reply parent

Ranked choice appeals to people. Like I said, I don't know why, but there is a reason it has been adopted in dozens locations in the US and approval has been adopted in just two cities, and is currently only used in one. I don't think it is because the people pushing for change are uneducated.

As long as there are a sufficient number of good candidates in the approval primary, I'm not sure it matters as much what voting method is used for the general. I do think we need both a primary and a general election; a crowded general risks a win by an awful-but-unknown candidate.

I agree, but when I talk to people who haven't researched voting methods, they are very resistant to using approval or score voting for the general. šŸ¤·šŸ¼ And I don't know why, but people also seem to prefer the idea of sending three candidates on to the general instead of two.

I still think approval/score voting would go a long way. Without partisan blinders on, people, collectively, aren't bad at determining competency. My brother likes the idea of adapting Alaska's system: have a unified primary using approval voting, and the top 3 go on to a ranked-choice general.

Having multiple places where individuals can vote would make it much harder for targeted intimidation to stop people from voting. It would make it easier for the news to report on it when it happens.

It would be worth encouraging Blue States to adopt Super Precincts/Voting Centers (if they haven't already), where you can vote at any polling place in your county (or other appropriate geographic area).

Too bad MSN is still in use; that would have been a better choice for a rebrand. I wonder if MSNews was too close, because that would have been a good option, too.

need people to understand that accepting or conceding that he has the authority to do these things is tantamount to giving him the authority, and so your preemptive dooming is actively counterproductive

I do occasionally. However scary they are in the moment, the fear and anxiety fades fairly quick once I'm awake, unlike the realistic ones where it sticks around.

A quarter of the country is out in the streets with the main demand to "stop the war". STOPPING THE WAR WILL STOP THE GENOCIDE. Those of you criticizing them for wanting to stop the war for the wrong reasons are the worst kind of virtue signalers.

Opposing enrolling international students in US universities because their spot could’ve gone to an American is like opposing exporting goods to foreign countries because an American could’ve driven that car, dammit! Education is one of our most valuable exports!

Part of the problem with omnicause shit is that it flattens everything to being as important as everything else until you’re coming up with some twisted logic for why having a different opinion at the margins on AI means you’re on the wrong side of trans rights or something.

This, I think, was clearly sold for direct human consumption, regardless of the label.

Cheesemaking sometimes starts with raw milk. Although there are some raw milk cheeses, I think it is usually because something about the commercial pasteurization or homogenization makes the milk unsuitable for some cheeses; recipes I've seen requiring raw milk start with pasturizing the milk.

Surplus City is so much fun! When I was a kid, my dad built us a "starship" console with stuff from there.
