If people will accept approval voting for primaries, but want more than two choices in the general, that is what we need to do for now. Because even if sub-optimal candidates then regularly win the general, they're still going to be better qualified than at least half the politicans elected today.
Waurii (@waurii.bsky.social) reply parent
Ranked choice appeals to people. Like I said, I don't know why, but there is a reason it has been adopted in dozens locations in the US and approval has been adopted in just two cities, and is currently only used in one. I don't think it is because the people pushing for change are uneducated.
Waurii (@waurii.bsky.social) reply parent
As long as there are a sufficient number of good candidates in the approval primary, I'm not sure it matters as much what voting method is used for the general. I do think we need both a primary and a general election; a crowded general risks a win by an awful-but-unknown candidate.
Waurii (@waurii.bsky.social) reply parent
I agree, but when I talk to people who haven't researched voting methods, they are very resistant to using approval or score voting for the general. š¤·š¼ And I don't know why, but people also seem to prefer the idea of sending three candidates on to the general instead of two.
Waurii (@waurii.bsky.social) reply parent
That's not good.
Waurii (@waurii.bsky.social) reply parent
I still think approval/score voting would go a long way. Without partisan blinders on, people, collectively, aren't bad at determining competency. My brother likes the idea of adapting Alaska's system: have a unified primary using approval voting, and the top 3 go on to a ranked-choice general.
