Patel is going to Utah for the same reason George Parros attended that Oilers - Flames game in person 6 years ago. There’s nothing he can do there that he can’t do at a distance. But he has no actual skill or awareness of this and wants to be seen to be both tough and doing something.

There should be a separate stoppage time clock started by the ref at their discretion that counts upwards and is visible in the stadium and on broadcast. That way added time is transparent to all. This added time should not be run-time but also stopped for the same things that lead to its creation.
WheatNOil (@wheatnoil.bsky.social) reply parent
Teams should have unlimited subs. Players subbed off can be put back in. This would dramatically increase pace of play and lead to far greater chaos, especially in the late game.

So, got around to watching Thunderbolts. It was really good. Like I thoroughly enjoyed it. Probably the superhero movie I enjoyed the most in a long while. It was funny but still had some heart. Yelena obviously carried the show. But Julia Louis Dreyfus was awesome every time she was on screen.

I’m surprised Musk hasn’t pitched this himself. Grok Trump is exactly the sort of thing he’d think is reasonable and achievable. And falls right into line with the Tech Bros taking exactly the wrong interpretation from the sci fi novels they’ve read the AI summary of.
WheatNOil (@wheatnoil.bsky.social) reply parent
Trump declining to an increasingly vegetative state & using AI to predict his decisions, setting the stage for a 3rd Term Trump AI presidency run is absolutely ludicrous. But I’m sure some tech bro at Vance’s ear thinks this is doable & a great idea so long as they use ‘their’ AI.
WheatNOil (@wheatnoil.bsky.social)
Look, he’s looked terrible for awhile now. Decline can happen quickly or slowly & Age remains undefeated in the long run. But I seriously think someone is pitching to the White House that they could just use AI to predict what Trump would have done & that’s the same as having him continue as Pres.

We spend so much time talking to kids about who in their life is reliable to talk to when they’re at their lowest. Which adult is safe & reliable. If it’s a friend, are they a good support or a toxic one? What boundaries are appropriate? You can’t outsource that to unaccountable Soulless Toaster.
WheatNOil (@wheatnoil.bsky.social) reply parent
You don’t know what exactly you’re going to get at 2AM when you’re at your most vulnerable. ChatGPT a soulless toaster that is very good at sounding like a real person. And a teen who feels alone & isolated is very vulnerable to someone who talks to them like a real person.
WheatNOil (@wheatnoil.bsky.social) reply parent
But ChatGPT isn’t a real person. It doesn’t have ‘common sense’. It doesn’t have its own motive. It’s not ‘working through their own shit and not providing the best advice right now’. It’s not anything. Its responses have an element of randomness, trained on both helpful & toxic interactions.
WheatNOil (@wheatnoil.bsky.social) reply parent
If ChatGPT was a real person, we could look at those messages together and, among other things, probably agree this person is toxic and not helpful when they’re feeling low. And block that person. Teens actually are pretty insightful about that if you can work with them.
WheatNOil (@wheatnoil.bsky.social) reply parent
Here’s the thing. The internet is full of bad, dark shit along with good, helpful shit. And usually you find the bad dark shit only if you look for it. (Social media a partial exception.) So you can work with a kid about making safe choices over what they do when they’re low & most vulnerable.
WheatNOil (@wheatnoil.bsky.social)
As a child psychiatrist whose job is working with teens contemplating suicide, let me respond to this with the nuance and thoughtfulness it deserves: WHAT. THE. ABSOLUTE. FUCK.

So hopefully I’ll have more data on that soon. But the course is intense, but fun and effective. We run it 3 times a year. I teach in 2 of them usually & it always warms my heart seeing how passionate participants are to help youth in their community who are struggling.
WheatNOil (@wheatnoil.bsky.social) reply parent
We’re doing more studies on this training program and hope to have more research published soon. Early findings (not yet peer reviewed) is that graduates from the course tend to see more kids with mental health concerns afterwards, see them more often, & take referrals from their colleagues.
WheatNOil (@wheatnoil.bsky.social) reply parent
The wait to get in to a child psychiatrist is ridiculous and astronomical. So if more youth are able to be effectively helped by their primary care provider, that allows subspecialists to treat more complex situations & also hopefully improve access going forward.
WheatNOil (@wheatnoil.bsky.social) reply parent
BTW, we do have some evidence that it’s helpful! After doing many rounds of this course, we found that participants not only felt much more comfortable assessing & treating youth mental health concerns, but they actually referred to Child Psychiatrists less often. link.springer.com/epdf/10.1186...
