A bit of silliness from 2021. Kong's first line is taken directly from the 2007 BBC adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's Cranford.

Single-panel comic drawn in brown pencil. Godzilla and King Kong sit facing each other on mounds of rocks, taking tea, with an elegant tea set on the ground between them. Kong: 'What is all this agitation? Are the summer gloves come in?' Godzilla, waving an unfolded letter with a ribbon and sealing wax: 'Why, an invitation, to be sure! To Mothra's garden party!' Kong: *Gasp!*

This never gets old... to hold in your hand something you pulled out of your own brain and labored over and despaired of... highly recommended feeling

Hand holding a proof copy of a paperback book. Book cover is for Roadkill with words and art by Helen Whistberry. The title is in large yellow letters with red blood streaming down them. The title is along the side of a black asphalt highway with white lines on the side and a dotted yellow line down the center. There are three animal skeletons lying in the road: a large bird, a raccoon, and a snake. Blood streams over and around the skeletons. Interior pages of Roadkill by Helen Whistberry. The left side shows a wolf's head that has mouth open and is howling at the sky while a dark liquid creeps down its face into its luxurious fur. Text on right side reads: Wolf The bear is a fool. He fails to grasp the larger opportunity this conflict presents. I strike down humans naturally, as we are called to do on this night, but I do not neglect to kill any other living creature who crosses my path, from the chained-up dog cowering in its little house to a herd of deer frozen in fear at my might. I may only be half the creature I once was, but what teeth and claws I have left retain their expertise. In this way, our company of the dead grows and grows. For we must outnumber not only the humans but the living animals, else they will turn upon us as soon as the human threat is eliminated. I see how they look at us, flee in fear. We are as much an enemy in their eyes as the humans ever were. Not all, but enough of the others are sympathetic to my point of view and assist my plans. Our newly-turned soldiers are loyal to their makers. When the time is right, it is I who will rule and the bear who will take orders from me or be destroyed utterly, for I am as patient and sure as the sun rising in the morning.

Semi-regular reminder that you limit your potential reach on bluesky when you don't include alt-text on your images. If you can't or won't for reasons, this is just to let you know there is a pretty dedicated core of people on here who won't repost anything without alt-text as much as we'd like to.

The rolled up beetle is iridescent, shining green and light purple. Its legs round thorax and carapace tuck in to create the top of a ball, and its large flat head and legs slot together to form the bottom of the ball. The other beetle is untucked and shines with coppery tones. It holds its friend still before it rolls further down the slope. They both have speech bubbles to indicate their communication, the coppery beetles speech bubble has a question mark, and the green beetles speech bubble has a disorientated emoticon, with swirls for eyes.

At least they don't charge you $50 simply to set up a title with them the way they used to. That was truly the worst... and I think you had to pay another fee every time you changed something? I've honestly thought about not offering paperbacks at all but I know a lot of people still prefer print

The images are part of what isn't displaying correctly but I've published other things with them that had images without this problem so I'm kind of at a loss. May need to downsize the images but there's other spacing issues too. It is annoying!

Yeah, I've heard that too. There seems to be some kind of crossover behind the scenes so even if you think you're avoiding Amazon (or Ingram), you aren't necessarily. I went with Ingram for the only hardcover I've done because they have the dust jacket option which was fun

Yeah, Ingram has a totally different template from Amazon and it seems like it should be straightforward but they are very fussy about some technical stuff which I don't always understand so I end up just changing things more or less randomly until they finally accept it ๐Ÿ˜…

It's also looking like I'm gonna have to format a copy just for kobo. I've never had this problem before but the ebook is just not displaying right at all on kobo devices even though it looks fine on their app and other platforms. I sell so few kobo copies, kind of debating whether it's worth it :(

Yeah, I've had bad paperback copies from both Amazon and Ingram. I think someone told me once they use the same printers for their paperbacks. Had one from Ingram where a huge chunk in the middle fell out immediately upon opening ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜ญ

It is truly terrible and I don't understand why it has to be so complicated. Amazon sucks in so many ways but I've never had any issues with uploading content and cover files first try.

Niche vent for self publishing authors: say what you will about Amazon (and there's plenty to say) but you upload a paperback cover and they say OK here's your proof copy! I have never once been successful on my first try uploading a cover with Ingram. There is always something inscrutably wrong :(

Here is your Monday Morning Mantis. This is a European mantis (Mantis religiosa), a species that has become naturalized in many places (in this case, Montana). They can be various shades of brown or green. This one was especially pretty, with peach-colored wings and yellow-tinted eyes. ๐Ÿ™๐ŸŒฟ

A macro photo, vertical orientation, of the front half of a mantis, hanging upside down against a background of out of focus greenery and purple flowers. โ€œThe two insects fight vigorously using gladiators weapons. The cicada on the left protects itself with a shield and raises the sword to hit its opponent, who fights with a spear and a shield. Both insects are finely engraved in detail, with the use of the typical mirror-polished globular elements. Groundline. Traces of letters in the field, partly erased due to the ancient wear marks of the stone surface. Attractive size and color of the stone. Slight crack in the lower left corner of the stone.
