This happens to me sometimes, but I generally snap out of it when I realize my writing suffers. Without regular reading, my brain falters. Then I get back into it and wonder why I stopped. This time, my reading drought was broken by Ed Park's "An Oral History of Atlantis." Good stuff!

This photo includes two planets and a natural satellite: the Moon, Venus, and Earth (foreground). One nearby star (the Sun) is just out of frame in the lower right. It’s not bad for a phone camera, if you ask me.

Predawn sky showing a crescent moon extremely close to a bright point of light (Venus) over a horizon of dark trees. The sky is mostly deep blue but is deep orange in the lower right.

Happy Wins-day! On January 2, I sent my first query letter. Yesterday, I signed my debut book deal with Bloomsbury. Eight months. Fast on paper, but it didn’t feel fast while I was in it. There was waiting, doubt, and more back-and-forth than I care to remember. If you’re in it now, keep going!

I’m going to keep writing. This isn’t determination or confidence. It’s compulsion. Since I’m here either way, I figure I should take the time to write something I’m proud of. I talk about my process in an (admittedly verbose) interview: www.mainewriters.org/events/2025-... 6/16

When I started writing again after a 20-year lapse, I didn’t realize there was such a supportive community out there. Now, when I see other #writers succeeding, I’m genuinely excited. I’m grateful for the positive comments I’ve received. So: If you like something a writer’s done, say so! 5/16

Twenty years ago, I stopped writing because I figured I wasn’t very good at it. Turns out I’m okay at it. I don’t think I’m a big deal. I’m just hanging on, really. I did, however, win a major award. Don’t forget that, buster. www.mainewriters.org/events/2025-... 4/16

My first published piece was “Splice.” I’m lucky and grateful that Epiphany picked it up. It gave me enough confidence to keep going. epiphanyzine.com/features/spl... In July 2023, I read an excerpt at Epiphany’s launch party in NYC. I’m bald as hell. 3/16

I’m proud of my short story “Downstream Benefits” (Pangyrus, 2024), which was nominated for a Pushcart and, in 2025, won a Maine Literary Award. It combines serious topics (depression, attempted suicide) with corporate satire. Why? Find out: www.pangyrus.com/fiction/down... 2/16

What’s that? You want me to pin an intro thread to my profile? Fine: By profession, I’m a copyeditor. Since 2023, I’ve been writing literary short fiction. I have a portfolio: www.willwilloughby.com I’m a husband and father. Our dog, Charlie, is a doofus. 1/16 #WritingCommunity

How about Unforgiven (1992)? Not sure how accessible it'd be to that age group, actually, but it's one hell of a movie. Good luck! 😊

Please do! I often hear that people have had bad experiences. Sometimes they’ll say “I can’t do those.” That’s the room’s fault, not yours. Most aren’t done well, sadly. We hope to fix that (clear, intuitive puzzles, adaptive difficulty).

My wife and I are planning to open an escape room. We just looked at a space that used to be a bank. Of course there’s a vault. How great would it be to give players one key, and then they spend an hour figuring out which box it opens? We’d call it Brute Force.

A thick vault door is open, showing a room filled entirely with lock boxes. A closer view of the many lock boxes, all of which have their doors open.
