This happens to me sometimes, but I generally snap out of it when I realize my writing suffers. Without regular reading, my brain falters. Then I get back into it and wonder why I stopped. This time, my reading drought was broken by Ed Park's "An Oral History of Atlantis." Good stuff!

Happy Wins-day! On January 2, I sent my first query letter. Yesterday, I signed my debut book deal with Bloomsbury. Eight months. Fast on paper, but it didn’t feel fast while I was in it. There was waiting, doubt, and more back-and-forth than I care to remember. If you’re in it now, keep going!

I’m planning on co-authoring a novel—a kind of comedy sci-fi adventure. My realistic short-term plan is to have it made into a blockbuster movie starring Matt Damon so I can retire to a lake house in Maine. Probably around the Moosehead Lake area. Maybe Sebago. We’ll see. 8/16

Please do! I often hear that people have had bad experiences. Sometimes they’ll say “I can’t do those.” That’s the room’s fault, not yours. Most aren’t done well, sadly. We hope to fix that (clear, intuitive puzzles, adaptive difficulty).

My wife and I are planning to open an escape room. We just looked at a space that used to be a bank. Of course there’s a vault. How great would it be to give players one key, and then they spend an hour figuring out which box it opens? We’d call it Brute Force.
