The issue is markets were comfortable with a view that Fed Funds terminal rate had a floor of around 3% and job growth might be slowing but would probably be steady in the 50-100k/month range, and now both of those assumptions no longer hold. There's not yet an "anchor" of what to trust.

Importantly, though, long-term unemployment (joblessness of more than 6 months) has been rising quite substantially. That suggests it's gotten a lot harder to find a job if you need one, which is consistent with what we've been hearing anecdotally.

Note: BLS is currently being led by William Wiatrowski, a "BLS lifer" who has served as acting commissioner twice before. E.J. Antoni has not yet been confirmed. And in any case, it would be hard for a commissioner to mess with the numbers in the short-term, at least without it being obvious.
