Extremely stupid WSJ OpEd from Treasury Secretary Bessent. He is both mad that the Fed did too much to support the economy when rates were at the zero lower bound (first paragraph) and that they missed on their inflation target (second paragraph). Just moronic. www.wsj.com/opinion/the-...

Successive interventions during and after the financial crisis of 2008 created what amounted to a de facto backstop for asset owners. This harmful cycle concentrated national wealth among those who already owned assets. Within the corporate sector, large firms thrived by locking in cheap debt, while smaller firms reliant on floating-rate loans were squeezed as rates rose. Homeowners saw their property values soar, largely insulated by fixed-rate mortgages. Meanwhile, younger and less affluent households, shut out of ownership and hit hardest by inflation, missed out on appreciation. By failing to deliver on its inflation mandate, the Fed allowed class and generational disparities to widen. Its pursuit of a wealth effect to stimulate growth backfired. “Unprecedented inequality is clear proof that the wealth effect is all too effective for the wealthy, but an accelerant to economic hardship for everyone else,” financial analyst Karen Petrou wrote in her book “Engine of Inequality” (2021).

This annoys me more than most because it's not a close call with some live dispute. Nobody, even Trump's own flunkies, has even put forward any kind of theory for why he'd have this power. The law's very plain and simple. It's not ambiguous. There is *no* argument on the other side to be hedging on.

If you're feeling behind financially, remember: Only 18% of Americans earn over $100,000, per FORTUNE. The average American employee (full-time) earns $62,500, per federal data. You're doing better than you realize. Don't let the internet fool you.

Calm in government bond markets across advanced economies continues for a second day, driven by weaker-than-expected U.S. economic data and solid demand for income-generating assets. What remains unchanged are the persistent challenges of high government debt/deficits/issuance and stubborn inflation

I don't think my pro-Ukraine credentials are in doubt, but even I'd struggle to argue that Russia, which Trump is neutral to positive on (h/t @josephpolitano.bsky.social) selling oil to India while fighting Ukraine, which he's negative to neutral on, constitutes a US national economic emergency.

This is incredible work. In a just world it would win some major reporting awards. I’m saying that now bc I don’t think it will. There’s a particular kind of scoop you only get by being a really effing good beat reporter for a long time who sources trust. Investigative reporting doesn’t prize that.

This is the international expression of Trump's "one really violent day" approach to domestic law and order. In addition to being illegal, we know it doesn't work.
