Actually more Nazi than Stalinist in style. Stalinist art tends to show smiling, passionate workers. The lack of affect here suggests we might be closer to the "Die for the Fatherland" phase of MAGA Fascism. At least I hope so.

The most common euphemism was "Entfernung," meaning "to put at a distance," "to remove." There's a whole subdiscipline of German language studies, "Nazisprache," Nazispeak, with its own dictionaries, etc.

I should add that French revisionists (usually far-Right) are big on data analysis. It makes it easier to fudge the numbers. Very similar to the "double Holocaust" theory: "Stalin was worse than Hitler, so let's go after the Communists!"

...it would allow them to skip the part where you go into the archives looking for that one crucial piece of evidence. That said, I sure would love to know exactly who planned the "spontaneous" execution of the Minister of Finance on July 25, 1789. Best,

So: was the Great Fear a spontaneous uprising of the Proletariat reacting to social pressures (very Marxist, that), or what reactionary historians call la Thèse du complot? I'm more of a Marxist, but there are questions about crowd manipulation in 1789 that I would love to see answered.
The Orange Press (@woid.bsky.social) reply parent
Well, I wrote my diss on the FR. Lefebvre's 1932 book is what the French call "incontournable." Lefebvre was a Marxist, & he set the tone for studies of the Rev. until the 70s. As Robert Darnton (another fine non-Marxist) pointed out, un-Marxist historians are still scrambling for another narrative.

Resistance takes many forms. Madrid never capitulated to Franco's fascist army. Instead the Loyalists ceased operations & allowed the Fascists to enter unopposed. Except, when the fascist generals arrived at the end of the Metro line the conductor made a fascist salute--& demanded full fare.

I remember, in the midst of May, '68, seeing carloads of Jewish Pieds-noirs (formerly Algerian Jews, therefore arch-reactionary due to the loss of their privileges over Muslim Algerians) waving French & Israeli flags & pumping their horns to the rhythm of "Algérie française!" All de Gaulle's doing.

Something tells me you're missing the irony, here. Look at the quick take on a frowning prime minister George Pompidou (former banker commonly derided as "Le Mouton-Rothschild" (Rotshchild's Lamb) who would succeed de Gaulle as President after May, '68 and radically change the French position. I

Not a coincidence, I suspect. There were a lot of progressives and Communists in the arts in Seattle at the time. The inclusion of a Japanese performer must have been a deliberate statement.

By way of an explanation: I attended the same high school as Sartre. I'd say he's letting us down, here.
The Orange Press (@woid.bsky.social) reply parent
Also: Du Camp was a first reader and adviser on L'Éducation; I would say Flaubert's silence regarding La Commune would represent some kind of a step in the right direction.
The Orange Press (@woid.bsky.social) reply parent
I suspect Sartre would have given preference to Zola who at least was engagé, even if it was the wrong kind of engagement.
The Orange Press (@woid.bsky.social) reply parent
Obviously not, but Flaubert's hatred for the revolutionaries of 48 is on full display there. At least Flaubert didn't write the vicious stuff about the Commune that Zola spewed. (Yes, Zola. He was correspondent for Le Télégraphe de Marseille.)
The Orange Press (@woid.bsky.social) reply parent
Uncommonly superficial for Sartre. Flaubert was close friends with Maxime Du Camp, who was a Versaillais officer (and who spared the life of Jules Vallès). All you have to do is read L'Éducation sentimentale to understand what Flaubert thought of the Commune.
