LotR taught me how to see the earth as sacred and worthy of love, how to fall into a tale greater than myself and practice hope without guarantees, how to grieve for an irretrievable past without surrendering the possibility of a meaningful future. And it never needed Christianity to do that.
Similarly, Galadriel speaks of fighting the long defeat. She knows it's a defeat. She fights anyway.

My father unironically pronounced it that way to his dying day. Even after multiple people corrected him (including me, who for a while majored in French). He insisted his pronunciation was correct. But I went years saying "DEB-acle" and "MYZE-eld" (misled*), and rhyming "banal" with "anal".

Funnily enough, "Rendezvous with Rama" was one of the books I had in mind. The resulting books can be enjoyable, to be sure. I enjoyed it too, but "Rama" is a prime example of the forgettable-characters issue. There are examples of authors who make both work (Rothfuss, Le Guin, Cherryh, Jemisin).
