He's coming along. Slowly. I tried some thicker, hairy spider legs coming out of his collar, but it threw the balance way off and overwhelmed the character. I like the spindly, ticky-tack ones better anyway. Still don't have a name for him yet. It'll come to me. Have a good night, mongrels.

The Stage. 2002. Pencil, oil and pastel on paper. 12”x18”. 24 year-old me was just finding my legs as a self-taught illustrator and this was a piece that helped shape a lot of work that came after it.
Early stages of August Gallows: Over the Moon. 2024. I laid down a charcoal base and work with graphite over that, using an eraser for the highlights instead of white pencil.

All the detail isn’t there to make up for a lack of anything. It’s there because I want it to be. This isn’t an Old Masters figure study course. It’s a work of imagination.
I do sharpen my pencils with a pencil sharpener sometimes. But I sharpen them carefully, not necessarily seriously. I use knives as well. Sometimes, I use sandpaper. Depends on what I need in a given moment.
1. It’s not human. Please note the preliminary sketch shown below. 2. It’s not a drapery study. It’s an imaginary character. 3. The point is that I’m an illustrator. That’s my job. And it’ll be whatever I want it to be. 4. I’ve worked in fashion, so I’m acutely aware of how designers work.
Got the creases and wrinkles mapped out, now I'm adding the texture. Whether it's corduroy or tweed, it's something more dense and decorative. So this entails sharpening an H pencil as sharp as I can get it and pulling lines over the topography of the coat. This gives the coat some personality.

I’m always late getting to shows, if I ever get to them at all; but I finished the first season of The Righteous Gemstones tonight and it’s occurred to me that I never gave Danny McBride the credit that man deserves.
I haven’t. But the atmosphere and art direction of the games, from what I’ve seen, looks incredible.
I’ve still never played any of them, but they look gorgeous.

I got to see the At Home With Monsters exhibit at LACMA in 2016 and it quite literally changed my life. I had a knot in my throat the entire time. So many things that shaped my life as an illustrator and artist in one room. An absolutely beautiful experience that I’ll always be indebted to.

While working on multiple things simultaneously (I still have a couple commissions to finish that’re overdue), I’m still trying to figure out how I want to approach relaunching my Patreon. What to offer that’s not on other platforms and how to curate it to folks interested in the creative process.
I never got one single job out of these things. And the only person at a convention that actually kept one was the girl working the Konami booth at GenCon. In hindsight though, they really do just look like manifestos, so it was a giant marketing failure on my part.

l'd planned to make the skirt some checkered pattern; gingham, argyle, something. But that's been my go-to since I was a teenager and I love it, but I wanted to try something new. It's not quite polka dots and it's not quite black mold... But it could be either. Or both.

What Halloween-loving girl doesn’t want a fuzzy, black cardigan with lace trim? I rendered the head in a harder, lighter 6H lead while the top is being done in a much softer, much darker 5B. I still don’t know what I’m doing with the skirt yet.
