I thought I read that climate warming will shorten the periodicity of the PDO, not increases it. Could be wrong. Maybe this is more about the recent longevity of La Niña-like conditions in the tropical Pacific.

New Zealand will replace its gas tax with road user charges based on distance, time, and weight. "Weight" is an intriguing variable. Will owners of massive SUVs and utes need to pay extra b/c of their environmental and safety costs? (They should.)
Jason Furtado (@wxjay.bsky.social) reply parent
I think you need the right metric to discuss increases in the chances of extreme weather due to climate change. For example, in the US (and other places), property insurance rate increases are a prime metric to use to engage people about this idea. Scientists also need the appropriate training.

I think that is a great thing to do for any type of analysis (test reproducibility and how physical the results are). I'm just curious why there would be a "maybe" ban on them.
Jason Furtado (@wxjay.bsky.social) reply parent
I don’t, at least in the sense of just straight bans. Universities are places where students should learn about GenAI and what is should or should not be used for and why it shouldn’t be used for certain tasks. We are doing our students a complete disservice with just“bans” without context.
Jason Furtado (@wxjay.bsky.social) reply parent
“Maybe ML codes” Why a “maybe?” What’s the issue with using neural networks or random forest or optimization for data analysis? Those are predictive tools, not generative.

Not defending current policy, but... Isn't there an "average" rate of inflation? So, won't prices on some commodities become "the highest ever" just because of that? I understand that technological advances can reduce costs for some things, but I am speaking solely on inflation effects.
Jason Furtado (@wxjay.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm confused - We shouldn't rely on technological advancements in energy and transportation for climate change solutions?
