The key is education. We need to stop whitewashing US history. It's essential to acknowledge the damage perpetuated by the "manifest destiny" mindset. This whole "god bless america" crap needs to stop. We aren't great -- and never have been. We've just been good at lying to ourselves & others.

I know several families who have canceled trips to Disney and cruises because freedom of speech matters more than money spent supporting a company that bent the knee to a wannabe dictator. Keep in mind you're supporting fascism when you go there.
I know people who have cancelled vacations they planned last year. The company has no idea how seriously people are taking this. Free speech is on the line; we aren't playing. Between the GOP boycotting them because they're woke & libs now doing the same because they bent the knee, it will hurt.
I wouldn't worry about those jobs, anyway....the felon's new $100,000 fee for each new H1B visa means there will be fewer foreign workers -- and fewer foreign companies investing in our country because it's no longer worth it when you consider the cost of spending money to support fascism.
Also, blaming highly qualified foreign workers for our country's failure to adequately educate and train our own people because Republicans have been allowed to systematically attack and defund public schools for 70 years means you haven't been paying attention.
Most of those jobs are given to people from countries that value education far more than we currently do. The H1B visa holders they detained when they did the Hyundai raid were highly experienced and trained engineers, fluent in Korean and English. How many US engineers would qualify?
The amount we get often isn't enough to live on. Increases in Social Security don't keep up with the cost of living, and SNAP cuts are making it even harder for the poorest of the poor. If the current farcical administration gets its way, we'll lose it all. They don't think we deserve to live.
Getting it before the felon arrived on the scene was already hard as hell. Upwards of 85% initial applications are abritrarily denied. Far too many people end up having to get attorneys who are able to take up to 25% of their back pay if and when their application is approved. It's insane.
IF YOU CAN. Some of us have mobility issues. Please don't ignore the disabled and those with transportation issues.

I had never been fully accepted by them, so maybe that was the difference. I was allowed to give and serve, but my participation was limited to supportive or behind the scenes activities. I was socially awkward and shy in addition to being overweight, so I was inferior to others.
Thank you. It was one of the hardest decisions I ever made, but I don't regret it. As a survivor of childhood and adult SA and DV, there was no way in hell I was going to vote for that arrogant, hateful, racist rapist and pedophile. It was worth everything I lost as a result.

5/ No support. No sense of community. No family. No friends. Total isolation. Until you experience it, you can't understand how it affects you -- mentally and physically. Your body reacts to the effects of the stress it puts on you. As a result, most people end up going back.
4/ It makes Amish shunning seem like a board game. The Amish can still live in the same house as their families when they're being shunned. They can still eat at home, though they'll have to sit at a different table. These folks completely exclude those they consider to be in rebellion.
3/ No phone calls. No text messages. If they allow you in the sanctuary, nobody will sit near you. In fact, they'll get up and move. They won't let their kids play with yours. They'll ignore you if they see you on the street or in the store. If they're family, they'll exclude you from gatherings.
2/ This caving frequently includes apologizing in front of the congregation on a Sunday morning. For thinking for yourself. Or disagreeing with a decree from the pulpit. The thing is, they have members so conditioned, a lot of people do exactly that. The alternative is total shunning.

The Democratic party focuses on urban areas to their own detriment. The number of blue voters in rural areas is increasing, yet they keep acting as if we aren't even here. It makes us feel like our votes are irrelevant, even if we know better.
They think the elderly and disabled don't need teeth, eyes, or the ability to hear. Did you know that Medicare doesn't cover incontinence supplies??? For the elderly and disabled??? What the actual hell? If you're poor enough, Medicaid will cover a set number every month, but Medicare doesn't.
2) I just got new glasses. My Medicare plan covers $197 for an exam & single vision glasses. I've been wearing progressive lenses since 1985. My eyes are extremely sensitive to light, so I need several coatings on the lenses. After the Medicare payment & discounts, I still paid $500 out of pocket.
1) I lost all my teeth thanks to a bad medication reaction. I have small jaws and extreme dry mouth, so adhesive won't hold my dentures in place. I need implants. Medicare says they're "cosmetic." I don't have $20K to pay for them myself. I haven't been able to wear my dentures since 2014.
If they didn't have double standards, they wouldn't have any standards at all.

No problem here. There are no local affiliates here. The nearest TV station is in Savannah, 60 miles away, and we can't get it unless we pay for satellite (HELL NO!).

In 2024 there were TWO Democratic candidates. One was Harris. The other was Liz Johnson, who ran for the US House in GA District 12. She lost; the R incumbent got 79% of the votes. Democrats don't run out here because they wouldn't win. There's not enough support -- local or national.
In 2018 and 2022 Stacey Abrams ran for governor of GA. One comment we heard about her loss was that blacks and others living in rural areas got the distinct impression she DGAF about them. She campaigned in urban areas. I've never seen a Democratic candidate out here. We may as well not exist.
I don't know...it's so damn hard to tell. I can't tell you how many people I talked to who said flat out they weren't voting for Harris because Gaza or the primary or her history as a prosecutor or goddess knows what else... Did they vote for her anyway, abstain, or do the unthinkable?
My youngest is allergic. She got bitten at a playground one night and almost immediately started reacting. By the time we got to the ER 15 minutes away, she had welts on her neck. After that, she couldn't go barefoot except on the beach. She had to wear socks & shoes -- no sandals. In Florida.
I'm not an angel....don't get me wrong. I couldn't live with my son. No way in hell. We are WAY too different. My daughter and I are like besties. Back before cellphones, people confused us on the phone all the time - even my siblings can't tell us apart when we're talking. We have fun with it.
Medicare/Medicaid won't pay for them because he's only severely HOH, not profoundly deaf. I try not to be upset at his Master's-educated teacher mom for refusing to send him to the St Louis School for the Deaf when he was a child, insisting he be "mainstreamed" instead. He misses so much....

It was, but not any longer. I had a pass in 2018, but It got to be too much of a hassle trying to figure out which days would be less crowded, and I just wasn't feeling it any longer. They've made the whole thing so expensive it's not fun any more. It's like they're catering to the wealthy.
Housing had become unaffordable for their family, so I did what needed to be done in order to keep them from having to live in shithole after shithole. Other people have lived in worse circumstances. They are family. They will get the house when I die - or they can take my insurance money and run.
Yep, it is. I do my best not to be snarky or moody. My room is on the other side of the kitchen (it used to be the family room). They pretty much took over the rest of the house. I spend most of my time in here with my kitty. I read, write, sew, quilt, listen to music, and peruse the internet.
It was a lot easier for us. We got up, put some clothes on, grabbed breakfast, and drove to my sister's house -- or, even better, met her at the park. When the park closed, we drove home and went to bed. It was a nice way to spend a day. We knew all the tricks thanks to her knowledge of the parks.

I can't even afford an overnight road trip right now, and I'm in desperate need of a break from the 7 lovely people with whom I share this house. I lived alone for 3 years before we combined households. Even when they're quiet, they're noisy.
That pretty much describes it. On the plus side, they did require masks for a while....7/2021 - 2/2022. Not great, but better than nothing. That was also when the whole "reserve your day at the park" thing started. We never had to think about that. We just went. That was before Covid, though.

When I was a kid my step-pedo was in the military. We spent 3 years in Germany. We visited The Netherlands and England, took a daytime Rhine River cruise, and drove through parts of France and Luxembourg. I'll never forget seeing Madurodam. It was amazing!
There are no down times any longer. Florida changed their school breaks to make it easier for families to go to the parks without holiday crowds. Central and South America have different break times now, too. The last year I lived there I went at least once a month -- every last day was crowded.
We went a LOT in the 90s (we lived in Tampa, and my sister worked at Epcot, so she got us in for free). They had down times then -- May was pretty quiet, as was October and the two weeks after Thanksgiving. We avoided summertime -- no resident of Florida goes to theme parks in that kind of heat.
I didn't plan on spending the last decades of my life in an authoritarian country. However, as bad as that sounds, I'm far more concerned about my kids and grandkids. I have several granddaughters; what kind of future will they have?
You might want to check into whether inter-library loans are available for DVDs - they do it here, but we're like 15 miles past where Jesus lost his sandals. It took a week to get a book I requested that wasn't available here, but a library less than 2 hours away had a copy. I'm okay with that.

A bottle of water is now $4.50, though you can get a small cup of ice water for free from any food vendor or restaurant and refill the cup at water fountains -- or bring a non-glass water bottle with you and use it throughout the day. Meals start at around $200-$300 per day for a family of 4.
Now the price depends on when you go, how many days you're going to stay, and which parks you want to patronize. The Fast Pass option costs extra, and using it for popular rides adds another charge. Transportation from the airport to the resorts used to be free -- now it's $67pp round trip.

Same here. I signed up for PBS -- they have lots of good programming for free, and you can acess even more by paying as little as $5 a month to support your local channel.
We own most of the MCU DVDs. My son in law is HOH, and captioning can really suck sometimes. It gets out of sync or the transcribers are fucking a donkey in the background instead of working. Captioning is more consistent with DVDs. We still have several hundred movies on DVD. No streaming? NP.

We didn't move far -- but GA has a lower cost of living. We still get the roaches, palmetto bugs, fire ants, venomous spiders and snakes, feral hogs, and obligatory gators.... and we also have gnats. Little fuckers. No locusts, though....I saw plenty of them when we lived in New Port Richey.
It took almost a week for my inter-library loan to get here, but I do love using the local conservative-run facility to get the books I want to read. They haven't banned them any of yet -- for adults, anyway.
