I saw Spinal Tap 2 today and I thought it was subtly funny and I laughed out loud several times. It was a perfect escape on a day I needed it. Full of odd jokes like the Museum of Glue. Fun seeing Paul McCartney and Elton John, too! (corrected for previous typo.)
Miller belongs in an asylum.
Both these films are showing at NYFF but I could only fit Nouvelle Vague in my schedule. It may be imperfect but I love the French New Wave so I can’t wait to see it.

After a shaky first episode, I’m finding The Paper amusing in a low-key way and the cast is definitely growing on me. I’ll keep watching despite the ads.
I liked the production but then I’m a fan of Casey, Lorna, McKenzie and Kelly, all wonderful.

Kenneth Lonergan’s You Can Count on Me (2000) has long been one of my all time favorite films, now in a 4K @criterion.bsky.social edition. I totally relate to the touching sibling relationship depicted. Laura Linney & @markruffalo.bsky.social are superb. The ending makes me tear up every time.

At a recent showing of the 4K restoration of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg at @filmforumnyc.bsky.social it was the first time in my many viewings that I saw that Roland Cassard drives his Mercedes into the garage where Guy works. Cassard exits his car but Guy isn’t free to work and doesn’t meet him.

Last night I saw one of the best original musicals I’ve seen in a while: Beau The Musical. It was written for queer kids to reassure them they are fine just as they are. Wonderful score, a winning cast led by Matt Rodin. Catch it before it closes in the West Village in early August.

The only shows I watch more than a few times on CBS are Elsbeth and Late Night with Steven Colbert. I think I will stop watching CBS altogether once Colbert is gone. They will probably replace Late Night with a wrestling show to appease the right wing administration.

I saw The Life of Chuck this afternoon. I read good things about this film but the first third almost put me to sleep. The cast is very good and I loved watching Tom Hiddleston and the young Benjamin Pajek dancing as Chuck at different ages. But the film left me shrugging by the end.
All this energy attacking Mamdani should be directed toward attacking Eric Adams instead.
