IMO the episode went some way towards finally establishing E&B’s bond, though their tête-à-tête still came looong after it should have (even in this ep!). I more meant Murtagh’s despair & sense of betrayal once he saw them together. I can’t imagine why the writers have Brian going behind his back.
Possibly an unpopular opinion: the overdue and much-awaited coming together of Ellen and Brian was somewhat marred for me because of how devastated Murtagh was. He didn’t deserve it.

She’s salty because she’s realized how many of us are invested in the Beauchamps and their story. How embarrassing for her to be so transparent in her condescending attitude and petty disdain…
The way I see it, she only cares enough to deliberately undermine them, and that’s about it.
I also respectfully disagree that Jamie’s character arc took that many eps in OL to develop and for viewers — myself definitely included — to become invested in his storyline. It’s not a comparison anyway, as it’s 2 vs. 4 main characters. I think we all just want to see more balance in BoMB. ☺️
Ultimately, I’m going by what I’ve seen on my TL, multiple posts highlighting one main character & actor without accounting for the almost singular focus on their development thus far: screen presence, back story, etc. Ellen has been great, but hopefully they’ll do Julia, Henry, & Brian justice too.
I personally don’t find Julia’s character underwhelming. I just think we haven’t been given enough/equivalent time and space with her so far. It’s a shame, since I, along with many others, am more eager for the Beauchamps’ back story. Here’s hoping they achieve a better balance in future episodes.
That’s my point: it’s natural to form a rapport with the character who’s had much more time and attention dedicated to them, almost disproportionately so to the point it feels unfair to the other three & their arcs to single her & hers out at this stage. They haven’t had equal chance to captivate.
It feels like we’ve only been allowed to catch glimpses of the other actors’ portrayals so far. I, too, hope we get a better understanding of and view into the Beauchamps’ pre-Scotland years (with baby Claire, please!) and learn more about Brian’s life and motives than what has been shown.
Precisely. We’ve seen and know more about Ellen and her brothers than even the love of her life (Jamie’s father, no less!). In my view, laying the foundation shouldn’t come at the expense of the main storylines and the lead characters.
Completely agree. I feel like we’ve spent much less in-depth time and merely scratched the surface with the other three main characters, including Brian in the MacKenzie-Fraser storyline.
I’m very much enjoying Harriet Slater’s portrayal, but IMO it’s unfair (or at least premature) to elevate it above other cast members’ at this point, when her Ellen has simply had the most exposure and focus in the initial episodes.
Hot take: the only main BoMB character who’s been afforded enough room to breathe and sufficient screen time to develop organically so far is Ellen MacKenzie.

I hope you enjoy it, though please be aware of trigger warnings. As I said in my mini review back when I watched the movie at TIFF, the subject matter isn’t the lightest and certain scenes are graphic and may be hard to take.

Agreed! It’s curious, though, how this “received knowledge” is almost always and quite pointedly in service of diminishing her female protagonist’s lineage and backstory, seemingly even more so after a sizable portion of the OL audience (distinct from her devotees) showed interest.
Also, you all know I say this respectfully as an avid reader, but… isn’t inventing a story and making things up the very definition of fiction? Which is… what she writes? 🙃
Leah, as a (*cough* better) writer of fiction yourself, could you please explain the logic here too? “I don’t see Claire’s parents, because they’re dead.” Um… Ellen and Brian Fraser aren’t anywhere near alive in any OL timeline, and yet they’re having a whole book written about them. What gives?

Exactly this. I’d venture that if the show garners interest once it airs or succeeds in any way, she’d be perfectly fine taking either partial or full credit for it too (while still dismissing the Beauchamps’ storyline).

To me, it was more hearing those years being referred to as the “mid nineteen hundreds”. Even “mid twentieth century” doesn’t have the same ancient feel to it!
