I love the objectivity of UK and EU reviewers. @carwowuk.bsky.social wanted to test luxury EV SUV range so they brought together a Polestar 3, iX, EV9, Q6, and GV70. Fun test!
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
Yup, Kia had been mulling EV3/5 built in Mexico at one point.

Awesome!

Perfect time to stop making them! 🥴 Oh Honda, never change.

All this new capacity is awesome 👍 Really only one large state working on demand is tragic 👎 We need both sides of the coin to address climate change 🙃

It's even crazier. This isn't the first time Fisker tried to do a new energy vehicle. This isn't the first time he failed. This isn't the first time the company was bankrupted. Imagine googling the vehicle, seeing the previous attempt ended in failure, and then spending 70k on one. Wild.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
And that's just one component of emissions, the GHG. The benefits to air quality and reduced particulate matter and trips to urgent care for Kiddos is nothing short of extraordinary. Life's better, and healthier, with an EV 🤙🏽
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
Ohhh, if it's that low, totally. I just didn't know if you were looking at the total sales and expecting a decent chunk. 200 for sure.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm expecting to see Hyundai return to 2nd after Tesla with incentives gone, GM not far behind, and both to continue to build the gap with Ford who's chronically unable to perform when it comes to new EVs and focused on ICE growth.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
If they can keep momentum. GM cut a shift at the plant because Honda's basically good with what they have, and they've already signaled they'll be raising prices and have also paused EV production on some models here in the U.S. I wouldn't expect momentum to continue based on those indicators.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm guessing the Kona sales are pretty week looking at their export numbers, and their decision to remove all but the base trim in the U.S.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
Self imposed, you can see the ebb and flow of unit priorities in their factory reporting for both brands.

I've said for a long time even our allies will tolerate the U.S. military being the biggest polluting institution for so long, sprinkle this in, and I expect that timeline is shortened considerably in general.

Whelp, Tesla's done in India :P
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
Medium: "I quickly realized after driving the car a few times that the estimated range was super inaccurate. My destination would be 10 miles away and it would consume double that in battery to get there." Tesla's range is deliberately inaccurate and so bad Recurrent had to develop their own calcs

Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
Motor Trend: "Ioniq 5 has NACS built in now, allowing for the charging convenience that was once exclusive to Tesla...plug right in at a Supercharger, adapter-free...rival EVs share that advantage and avoid such poor refinement and frustrating controls, why would anyone subject themselves to a MY?"
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
CAR: "Before you buy Don’t. Tesla’s tech might still be at the cutting edge, but all the Model Y’s rivals – such as the Ioniq 5, EV6, and Polestar 2 – are better cars. Tesla’s become so focused on producing a dazzling show stand for CES that it’s forgot its primary purpose is to build vehicles."
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social)
Because reputable outlets are sobering up and growing a spine when it comes to be transparent about how horrible Teslas are, it's time I collected them in a concise thread for dealing with the simp auto journalists stuck licking Musk's boots. Quotes abbreviated due to character limit.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
Elantra's pretty rough up front, aping the Sonata seems to put the IONIQ 6 in that category. EV4 is definitely... unique... but the direction the IONIQ 3 is taking, following the IONIQ 6 design wise, seems to indicate you'll get your wish in a year or so as they continue to electrify their lineups.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
Elantra's one of the few affordable sedans left, especially with the big sedan cull coming in general, so pricing it at the IONIQ 6 price as it's on e-GMP wouldn't make sense. e-GMP.s, half of their new platform, for affordable cars, would be a better fit, which is why Kia's debuting their EV4.

Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
Nice! I came from an all VW/Audi/Porsche background to Kia when the Niro launched (bought the hybrid at launch) and now IONIQ 5, and an EV9 replaced our SQ5/C40. It's great being brand agnostic and just going with the best stuff, right now, no one's putting out more best stuff in as many segments.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
Also the cognitive dissonance of EVs leading GM to their best month of sales ever and responding with "EVs are too affordable" is pretty wild when the affordability of EVs are literally what drove them to their best August effort. GM never fails to shoot themselves in the foot :P.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
True, but prior to the Mancin-ization of the EV tax credit, when Hyundai Motor Group EVs didn't qualify, they were already leading, second only to Tesla in EV sales. Given their EV product 'avalanche' they're about to unload, I expect a return to form, especially with Elon giving lazy shoppers pause
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social)
Look for HMG to return to 2nd place towards the end of this year as GM and Ford signal EV production pauses and price increases. August EV sales, U.S.: GM: 21,000 Hyundai: ~15,000-17,000 (need break down of Niro/Kona EV) Ford: 11,000

^ This isn't being said enough. I helped a buddy find a 2 year old current generation Niro EV for ~$15k after the credit. The average used car is $25k or so, and it's not going to be as comfortable or last as long.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
It's not strange when you realize they are built entirely on mundane engines. Hybrids allowed they to sell mundane engines longer, which is why they've been the leading anti-EV lobbyists. They just tricked a bunch of well intentioned consumers into thinking they were green.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
Considering they’re stopping ID.4 production I’d doubt it
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social)
It was always funny watching people try to rationalize killing the bolt and pushing both DEM and GOP administrations to tariff affordable mini and Volvo EV hatchbacks. It’s just greed. They don’t want there to be competitive affordable EVs in the U.S. market and now they’re saying the quiet part.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social)

Also, if you're someone who's been considering the Buzz, VW just stopped the ID.4 production and I'm not going to be surprised if they let current inventory on the ID.Buzz sell through and then take it out of our market next year. It's 50% more than an EV9 or IONIQ 9, but way better than launch.

Really amazing EV deals right now. If you're leasing one this month *please* use Lease Hacker to familiarize yourself with the current market and incentives, not only the negotiated deals, but also the recently signed ones. leasehackr.com

Remember when, along with the base <$35k Volvo EX30, we were going to get a base, <$35k Mini EV! Then Ford and GM colluded to lobby both DEM and GOP administrations to tariff just Chinese EVs, but not all Chinese vehicles, as Ford and GM sell Americans Chinese vehicles with their badges?
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
Reactive - Ford: “We needed a radical approach and a really tough challenge to create an affordable vehicle that delights customers in every way that matters: design and innovation, flexibility, interior space, driving pleasure, and lower cost of ownership."

And exercise in competence and confidence. Proactive - SMART: The model’s premium two-seater positioning results from the multi-year “project: two,” in which Smart meticulously planned and developed all aspects of the car, including a market launch timed for the end of 2026.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social)
In no scenario would I pay more for a Q6 compared to an EV9 or IONIQ 9. I guess that's why VWAG, who we almost exclusively purchased up until recently, lost out on the last five vehicles.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
And maybe I missed it on Aug 11, but I only heard talk of a (1) new EV being built at a single plant that was going to see hundreds of manufacturing jobs removed. Again compared to competently run companies that debut global platforms and rapidly implement them at factories globally. Red flags.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
But absolutely no one in the U.S. automotive press had a spine to ask very basic fundamental questions so here we are.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
We will see brands fold, many of these poorly run carmakers are the Motorola, Palm and BlackBerry of the automotive sector. Don’t forget, on top of over 100 recalls and the costs there, the impacts of tariffs on a brand with poor margins and heavily reliant on just in time multi cross boarder trip
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
A competently run car company? Sure. A company who can’t bring EVs to market and who are about to double the recall record in their home market?
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
It’s wild to hear US car company CEOs phrase it that was as though they’re all having epiphanies a half decade after U.S. consumers. Explains why sales are so bleak globally for them.

Pardon my ignorance as I don't live in the area and you post just popped up in my timeline, but how were they defining DCFC stations before this addition of Electric Vehicle Charging Facility to the code? It looks like Nashville has their fair share of them already operational.

When your country leads, it's easy for others to join in the fun. Look at the YU7, barely on sale and about to surpass the Model Y, from a car company who's first car (SU7) went on-sale last year. What's crazy is how behind western automakers are due to poor management and Stonkz.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social)
Really enjoy this era of commercial architecture. Some of the newer stuff at UCSD feels like it continues the conversation. Still learning how to shoot wide and deal with the abrasions that can occur, seems like keeping the aperture above 8 helped with this lens. Harmless hobbies rock.

Can you survive on 50% sales decline *this* decade (potentially) and commission % from JVs? Keeping in mind they stopped producing the rebadged VWs for a time due to lack of demand? Again, it's pretty bleak for manufacturers without the leadership or talent to release tons of new EVs globally yrly
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
And now, China, same thing. Ford lacks the talent to bring EVs to market there like other legacy automakers, so they're just doing another JV which begs the question, if you're two generations late to an EV platform, and can't regularly bring the new motivation of your core product to market...
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
Which I'm waiting for solid figures on, but can't be doing that well if the Kia EV3 is the best selling EV in UK so far this year. Customers aren't stupid, and nostalgia goes only so far, why pay *more* for a half assed conversion with worse range?..
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
So they entered into a JV with VW to build two variants of the ID.4(?), the Explorer and Capri, and around that time their EU head resigned, and they were on their third or fourth round of big layoffs of staff UK/EU. Still not hitting targets, so rushed electrification of Puma...
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
This is my gripe with Ford. Ford announces Lightning, and a $22B push to bring LOTS of new EVs by 2025. Makes sense because EU and UK EV mandatory % of fleet sales regs were finalized around that time. It's why we have R5/R4/Inster/EV3/EV2/ blah blah. Ford botched the entire thing, abroad, home.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social)
It's odd. EVs with good electric frunks and great software are also the ones struggling with sales Makes you wonder if class leading platforms at affordable prices might be more important the second half of this decade 🤪
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
^ this. China and Korea are releasing 300 wh/kg LFP soon while also focusing on solid state. Batteries are fine, now, it's just lazy carmakers that are choosing not to implement faster charging, longer range, platforms.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
The Puma EV is separate from the Mache-E/Explorer/Capri, it's a lazy electrification of a gas model, think first gen Kona EV, and like you mentioned, the reviewers say it definitely feels half assed compared to what China, Korea, and Europe are doing at *lower* prices. Europe's not safe for Ford
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
Dreading the day the Polestar 2 resets for whatever reason and having to find those articles with similar 'disarm a bomb' manual specific steps.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social)
Tech Crunch isn't great at car content, but I get the frustration expressed here. One of the biggest life improvements selling the Volvo C40 for the EV9 was moving from that google based in-car OS with archaic account setup, to HMG's model. It's not perfect, but it's much more consistent.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
And back to the OP, same with Toyota, the bZ is launching globally, not going to be that compelling abroad, which is why it sounds like they're working on their own line of developing market EVs as well.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
We are going to see storied manufactures with notoriously horrible management not survive this decade. Which is why I keep asking about GM and Ford global sales, and lack of relevant EVs there, when ~1/2 their yearly volume is... outside the U.S.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
Nah, they blew $22B on nothing and are apparently starting this effort with the new team from scratch after moving them to CA, so they're generations behind the Koreans and earmarked $2B for this while the Koreans, ahead, are spending what $28B actually building things and increasing market share.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
Either way, Hyundai will be debuting e-GMP.m cars/concepts this week having already brought e-GMP.s models (EV3/4, PV5) to production, so they're already on their next generation platform compared to what hit the market in 2021.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
True. eTNGA is behind pure EV stuff like e-GMP and Ford's new platform, but Ford's new platform producing a model in two years, will be over half a decade behind Hyundai. And I expect Hyundai to have 50% more EV models on sale in the U.S. by then to Fords... 4.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
Right? I love stuff like the Renault 5 and Inster but where the meat of the market appears to be is the 85 kWh to 100 kWh range, that's what folks want out of an EV really.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
Not by not even trying.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social)
Social media served me a creator that was trying to figure out how to combat cooling bills in this heat, talking about different temperatures they were setting their thermostat to without any help, the higher they set it the higher the bill. This is what happens with increased hot days + data cntrs

Don't even get me started on the firefly and the cute, affordable, compact niche it scratches for me, along with the Inster and Renault 5.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
Who knows? So far afield I've got no clue. Other automakers don't need super-secret-squirrel teams to routinely turn out lots of great, affordable, globally competitive EVs every year. It's anyone's guess after the three distinct course corrections during the last big announcement and $22B spend.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social)
I'm struggling to see the business case to be honest. I *love* stuff like the Ami, but that thrives because of laws in places like France that let kids drive them, and they don't have a collusion culture between their domestic automakers to flood the market with full size pickups.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social)
Brilliant really, I wouldn't be surprised if we see something similar from Hyundai with e-GMP.m, just phase in that 112 kWh gross pack for everything going forward that's on e-GMP.m.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
You don't say... oh hey, the E07, it reminds me of a certain Ford Ranchero patent drawing.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social)
When the subject of a road tax comes up, OR or elsewhere, and folks say EVs need to be paying their fair share, it's clear the country struggles with basic high-school science and doesn't take the climate catastrophe seriously. When EVs are so incentivized you'd be stupid not to buy them, people do
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
I’d say fords further behind honestly. They’re years away from another EV and Toyotas launching what 3-4 this year?

It's kind of like the mach-e, we're at the point where brands that are struggling and don't have great cohesive strategy kinda look at what they can do, at what price-point and then just kinda tilt it towards their products folks are the most nostalgic for, see also Honda. Audi's doing that here.

Considering it's the same designer, I'm not surprised.
Zamafir (@zamafir.bsky.social) reply parent
It's a great sign that we're at the point of splitting hairs over these offerings because they're coming to market so mature, it's going to move quite a few folks looking for something from GM with three rows into an EV in this price bracket.
