Nightclub owner Rick Blaine, in the film Casablanca, warns German Major Strasser of the S.S. not to even try invading “certain sections of New York.” It was Nazis and New York back then. Currently it is ICE and Chicago.

We need you to infiltrate a notorious pedophile hangout. To make sure they don't suspect you, you will be a real-life pedophile. To do this, we are going to have you become best friends with the main pedophile for years, and then to ensure you don't get in trouble, you need to get elected president.

The context is a criminal defending his crimes to the man who was once his best friend—and whom he is contemplating killing if the friend doesn’t let up on his investigation into the truth about “the third man.” If you haven’t seen the film, do yourself a favor and watch. It’s brilliant.

The Swiss told Welles the same thing after the film was released in 1949. Nonetheless, it is a brilliant line—and a perfectly immoral defense of the character’s crimes. The misattribution, if anything, underscores how little Harry Lyme cares for human life, let alone the truth.

“In Italy for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.”

Orson Welles in the ferris wheel scene from the brilliant postwar film noir classic, “The Third Man” (1949, d. Carol Reed, wr. Graham Greene, Alexander Korda, and Orson Welles, who wrote this line).

An enlargement of Baby Yoda pixel art created by Justin Dauer and copied without attribution by all kinds of people on Reddit and other social sites. Credit where it’s due. Yoda is a character from a film called “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.” But y’all know that. Baby Yoda is a character from a Disney streaming spinoff show. Is it The Mandalorian? I don’t know, what do you want from me. The image is of a super cute green brown-eyed baby alient wearing some sort of overly large brown garment. It’s all done with pixels. The enlargement shows the talent and artistry involved.

I’ve started a Bluesky list featuring some of the brilliant writers, designers, coders, editors, and others who’ve contributed to A List Apart “for people who make websites.” Are you on the list? zeldman.com/2024/11/24/a...

Good morning, Bluesky! Detail from the cover of Three Dimensional Tales from the Crypt of Terror No. 2, Spring 1954. Art by Al Feldstein. Copyright: TM & © William M. Gaines Agent, Inc. Story in @parisreview.bsky.social: www.theparisreview.org/blog/2020/10...

In Al Feldstein’s drawing, a young red-haired comic book reader, having donned cheap plastic 3D glasses (the kind that were used for 1950s 3D movies) reacts in horror as monstrous red dead hands reach out from the comic book he holds, as if to strangle him. The comic he reads is being held out to him by the Crypt Keeper, who seems to have dental and saliva problems. A creature wearing 3D glasses—possibly a dog, possibly a monkey, it’s not clear—pants happily as the comic book reader pulls back in horror. A candle is burning on the wooden table where the characters are enjoying their reading experience. In one corner of the table, a disembodied skull also wears 3D glasses. In the very background of the shot, a mummy is about to put on the glasses as well. Al Feldstein’s signature appears in a box toward the bottom left of the drawing. The sky behind the mummy is blue, while it is black behind the other characters—as if they are sitting in a darkened movie theater, whereas the mummy is just coming in from the lobby, perhaps. Or maybe the colorist just screwed up. The drawing is roughly 70 years old, who knows.

Innovation makes useful things smaller and smaller. Overconsumption makes things bigger and bigger (and more dangerous with bigger costs & consequences). Bigger vehicles and larger homes for fewer people is not progress. HT @fietsprofessor for graphic
