The entire point of Taylor Lorenz's article was to give ammunition to leftists to attack liberals. Doesn't matter how many lies are within it, the point is to target their enemy.

Everyone keeps insisting that liberals should listen to leftists more, meanwhile leftists are CONSTANTLY trying to destroy liberals. With friends like these...

He is a POS, for sure, but he has *very* good political instincts. It's rather frightening how sharp he is when it comes to political realities and public opinions. Go back and listen to him when it came to hurting Hillary in 2016. He was spot on in how to do it, and it sadly worked.
Zookdar (@zookdar.bsky.social) reply parent
To them, cultural grievance is politics. They cannot separate the two.
Zookdar (@zookdar.bsky.social) reply parent
How do you define liberal here?
Zookdar (@zookdar.bsky.social) reply parent
It is every citizen's duty to protect and defend our nation. That means each and everyone of us has a direct obligation to vote for the choice that achieves the maximal good. Do we complain about not having the perfect choice in all other aspects of our lives? Do you have a perfect dinner nightly?
Zookdar (@zookdar.bsky.social) reply parent
Policy positions?? Only limp-wristed nerds talk about policy! Real men just get shit done! Probably.

Touche, I forgot about that land up there. I was thinking about the Baltic nations. That's especially important to this "boogie man of NATO expansion." Add on Finland and that's another 800+ miles...
Zookdar (@zookdar.bsky.social)
The media and internet act like Biden didn't know what he was doing. But Biden was able to explain EVERY item he signed and why he was doing so. But here (and each time)... Trump needs one of his controllers to explain to him what he's signing. Then he nods along like he actually understands.
Zookdar (@zookdar.bsky.social) reply parent
The implication is that NATO would invade anyone. It's such an obvious lie treating the world like it's 1900 again. Russia has bordered NATO for nearly 20 years! Ukraine isn't some magical place that a defensive alliance would use it to attack... These obvious lies are treated too seriously.

This is an amazing creator whose work on the state of comedy and culture has culminated in this documentary. It's about the loss of a meaning and connection to the real world many face, and how that has specifically impacted some of the most influential people in our world. I highly recommend this.

I don't think I've seen it said so well between the liberals and those far to their left.

It's tiring every complaint is somehow political. I yearn for a time when people didn't dress up generic grievances as some political statement.
Zookdar (@zookdar.bsky.social) reply parent
The entire point of a rules-based international order is to prevent wide-scale conflicts. I'd say that's been pretty dang successful. It also lends legitimately to any international actions when countries break those agreements. That helps build coalitions that... help prevent wide-scale conflicts.
Zookdar (@zookdar.bsky.social) reply parent
The country acts like cultural grievances are the same as political interests. It's tiring the two get conflated.
Zookdar (@zookdar.bsky.social) reply parent
I'd like to see everyone blow up the outrage and act like it's Sweeny 2.0. Time to Newsom the news... some.
Zookdar (@zookdar.bsky.social) reply parent
Ok. You're probably right.
Zookdar (@zookdar.bsky.social) reply parent
No insistence, I just don't think it's so simple as it used to be. These dark enlightenment and neo-nazi/neo-nationalist types have changed their views, tactics, and goals. Do we want to just shout RACISM? Sure, it's easy. And probably mostly true. But it also hides the even more insidious nature.
Zookdar (@zookdar.bsky.social) reply parent
They mean white American culture, for sure. But the neo-nationalists have figured out a new way to frame how black people can fit into their world view. It's an outright destruction of black history and reframing it with a false harmony with white history. Look at JD Vance and his wife.
Zookdar (@zookdar.bsky.social) reply parent
Somewhat. White nationalism expresses that "white" is a race, and for sure that's why they talk about Europeans like they're a monolith. However, the various cultures and political beliefs of various Europeans do not fit into their view of American nationalism. I don't have a full theory here...
Zookdar (@zookdar.bsky.social) reply parent
That's why I hesitate to just call it white nationalism. There's a more subtle and pernicious framing of their world-view. They've figured out a more palatable way to spread their ideas among the general populace that would outright reject the explicit racist rhetoric.
Zookdar (@zookdar.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm not entirely sure it's *white* nationalism. There's something else in the undercurrent of the neo-nationalism movement from people like Sam Hyde. They're very focus on the idea of *culture* more than race. I haven't seen the idea of "back to Africa" like older nationalist movements.
Zookdar (@zookdar.bsky.social) reply parent
They're seeking a way to reframe nationalism to include black people in their definition. Nationalism needs a unifying idea of what a nation of people is, and it's tricky to do that when there is obvious historical separation of peoples. This neo-nationalism is about something more than just race.

And here's one last bit: conservatives cave in their boycotts. Bud Light might have sparked outrage for a hot minute, but everyone's drinking that swill again. Target pissed off people with disposable incomes and options. They've moved on, the people aren't coming back.
Zookdar (@zookdar.bsky.social) reply parent
Business leaders should keep their mouths shut about politics. Like seemingly everyone else today, they all feel they have the knowledge and wisdom to comment on a field they're totally clueless about. Look at what it cost Target. Shut up, do your job, sell your cheap garbage.

What Democratic states DO suffer from is they tend to have more legal hurdles to enact more gerrymandering: either statute guidelines or things like redistricting commissions.
Zookdar (@zookdar.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't recall if it was a Politico or another that went through demographics and gerrymandering analysis. The conclusion was that if non-citizens were removed from the role it would probably hurt Republican states more. For gerrymandering, Democratic states have a marginal or even split.

I don't have an issue with progressives advocating for their policy ideas, but it feels like they're trying to create a truism. That being: everyone agrees with them if only they learned about those ideas. They seem to claim the only reason they lose is because of the big, bad donor class.

Messages must be extreme on moderate issues. Or maybe what used to be considered moderate... Liberalism works with passionate groups working to identify problems and solutions together by using the levelers of government effectively.

The Dems did not have a supermajority. They had 59 seats, which as you all know is not enough to overcome a filibuster. Obama used the vast majority of his political capital on passing the ACA after dealing with the recession that kicked off under Bush.

Today's online politics rhetoric revolves around near-meaningless slogans. It's all in an effort to create thought-terminating allegiance. It's anti-intellectual and morally corrupt. Somehow neoliberal now just means "things I don't like" to its users. Not like they like liberalism anyway...
Zookdar (@zookdar.bsky.social) reply parent
One of the biggest false beliefs of the populist left is that the whole country wants what they want if only voters would learn about those 'policies.' Because their 'policies' are so amazing, any loses they suffer is because of "the establishment." Que Cenk yelling "THE DONOR CLASS!"
Zookdar (@zookdar.bsky.social) reply parent
Does that mean we should take at least some crap? 😅
Zookdar (@zookdar.bsky.social) reply parent
When I read "bipartisan" I interpret that as "Democrats pushed for it and a few Republicans got their head out of their ass."
Zookdar (@zookdar.bsky.social) reply parent
Agreed completely. Populism is just "us vs the elites." There's no foundational principles are values beyond hurting those "elites." That's why I can stand Cenk when he talks about populism. He thinks the right and left are aligned on a ton of things, like the problem is just marketing...
Zookdar (@zookdar.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't prescribe that "government does stuff" means it's socialist. Identifying what liberal democracies can do well and relabeling them as "owed to socialism" is reductive. Societies should identify what services they want and value, then find the taxes to fund them. We don't do that.
Zookdar (@zookdar.bsky.social) reply parent
The narrative that everything sucks because of corporations is an easy pill for some to swallow. It allows them to have a villain without analyzing other policies and conditions that probably need changing. "My life sucks because of this one group..." [group based on political alignment]
Zookdar (@zookdar.bsky.social) reply parent
Defund Police was a provocative, but ultimately very damaging slogan. ACAB doesn't help anyone either. That cringe stuff hurts the fight for meaningful changes.
Zookdar (@zookdar.bsky.social) reply parent
As far as everyone outside of the Republican party being labeled "far left," that's to be expected. It allows conservatives to ignore all their political opponents by framing them as kooks. To them, liberal and leftists are the same: radical socialists.
Zookdar (@zookdar.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm just making the point that even the name aside, the platform of the DSA is a nonstarter for most voters here. I won't even get into the sheer cringe they exhibit. I have no issue with the DSA existing or holding their sincere beliefs. But they are politically irrelevant.
Zookdar (@zookdar.bsky.social) reply parent
Social democracy isn't the same as democratic socialist. There are socdems in the Democratic Party. Generally the US isn't keen on ending capitalism. The DSA will always be on the outside of that.
Zookdar (@zookdar.bsky.social)
Democrats must be extreme in their messages on non-extreme issues. That's why people like AOC and Crockett. They're provocative in their rhetoric about issues people care about. It gets attention and is emotionally satisfying.
