Absolutely blistering takedown of the US government's mad climate report that rehashes the worst denier tropes of the past decade. US gov't took on a handful of self-serious denier micro-celebs, and in doing so, basically just hugely owned themselves in public sites.google.com/tamu.edu/doe...

“This new US Department of Energy Report is a travesty for US scientific integrity. It reads like a list of common climate skeptic tropes - long ago rebutted by the scientific community - being rehashed by a group of disgruntled scientists. The team of authors, hand-picked by Chris Wright, is a “My large-scale thoughts are that this was a fantastic response to a total disgrace. I remember feeling so shocked and appalled when I saw the original report and feeling completely at sea with respect to what to do about it. Seeing many of my role models in the field come together to put together a coherent response to something so disjointed and incoherent was really inspirational and made me remember why I got interested in this field.” - Dr. Lucas Vargas Zeppetello “One of my papers was cited in the DOE report that claims that greenhouse gas emissions have had “The DOE report is bad. Because different people have different learning styles. And different neurodiverse people have different needs. Taking notes may have stopped you and your father from absorbing what the speaker is saying, BUT it helps people with ADHD focus on the words, and prevents our mind drifting.

I saw today the dramatic effects of global heating up close. This is the Bonhus glacier in SW Norway, the photo on the left is from 1890. Like all glaciers in Norway it is shrinking rapidly.

Here's a table multiplying the per capita rate by the actual population size just to show how comically stupid this is.

It is a tribute to our dysfunctional information environment that right-wingers can basically commit 99% of the domestic terrorism, for *decades*, and that simple fact never penetrates to the public. They pay zero political price.

If this is not deliberately racialised imagery, it is at best fantastically naive to not understand that it looks & feels like racialised dog whistling to single out this man in such a way.

100% this. also the next sentence "Sometimes, these things are not complicated. Paying despots to take a bunch of refugees who fled them in the first place is wrong. And the refusal of my government – or much of the media – to say so disgusts me."

But the failure of the government to make this argument (or get a fair hearing on the all too rare occasions when it tries), means it gets zero credit for the plan it is pursuing.

Beware of any politician doing this. It’s a major red flag of the most cynical political opportunism, weaponization of lies & misinformation, and manipulation of some consultant’s idea of a “wedge issue.” It would waste public money, risk or even cost lives, weaken the city, make traffic worse, etc.

Data from BNEF on Sizewell C shows electricity costs could hit £286/MWh, making it much more expensive than other technologies. While it helps decarbonise, this price tag raises major questions about cost-effectiveness. Is nuclear too expensive to be a key part of the UK's energy solution?
