Prop 50 is about defending democracy. Republicans already stole seats in Texas without voters having any say. California is doing it differently: we get a one-time shot to fight back, then it reverts to our independent redistricting commission.

No one is "disregarding" this, it has been the subject of relentless coverage from media and politicians since 2020. Everyone knew school closures were going to be very hard on kids. The trade-off was that not closing them was going to result in mass death. No win-win scenario was on the table.

California and Florida are on opposite ends of the school-closure spectrum and the differences in test scores are a wash. Some individual schools and districts definitely stayed closed too long but it just isn’t the case that this is some huge, obvious, foreseeable blunder.

Neither Florida nor California saw a statistically significant change in 4th-grade reading performance on the National Assessment of Educational Progress between 2019 and 2022. Meanwhile, Florida's 8th graders performed worse on the reading exam in 2022 than in 2019, while California's 8th graders' performance was unchanged. Both states performed worse on the 4th- and 8th-grade math assessments in 2022 than in 2019 Despite their states' similar performance on NAEP, which places both states above the majority of the rest of the country, the two governors accused each other of overseeing some of the worst learning loss in the country.

This is the interim CDC Director. He is accusing pre-Trump CDC staff of “manipulating health data to support a political narrative”. This man and his boss Kennedy are the ones who are manipulating data for a political narrative. This is an existential threat to the United States of America.

Public health is a noble calling. When it is driven by transparent data and rigorous science, it earns public trust and keeps the world safe. The beating heart of public health in America is CDC. During the previous administration, CDC lost public trust by manipulating health data to support a political narrative. The Trump administration is rebuilding trust and refocusing CDC on its core mission of keeping America safe from infectious disease. We have invested in new screening technology to detect infections from foreign travelers, stopped the Texas measles outbreak, and ended the misuse of the childhood immunization schedule for Covid vaccine mandates. With the support of @SecKennedy, President Trump has directed me to serve as acting director of CDC, in addition to my duties as deputy secretary. We are helping the agency earn back the trust it had squandered. I look forward to working with CDC's dedicated team and announcing additions to the senior leadership in the weeks ahead.

An important piece of context here is that Democrats controlled both houses of Congress for only the first two years of Obama’s presidency. Republicans currently control not only Congress and the WH, but also the SCOTUS. And still, Trump is governing by EO and fiat.

The Financial Times published my letter about Peter Thiel, "The Sovereign Individual," and the nation-destroying aspirations of crypto. on.ft.com/47mldxs

Gil Duran letter: Gillian Tett’s column on crypto (“Five things investors should ponder on crypto”, Opinion, August 2) acknowledges the risks of corruption and consumer harm, but leaves out an important geopolitical question: what is crypto really for, besides crime and casino-like speculation? In their 1997 book The Sovereign Individual, James Dale Davidson and the late Lord William Rees-Mogg wrote that a forthcoming “cybercurrency” would undermine government authority and hasten the collapse of nation states (“The book that explains the billionaire doomers”, Opinion, July 25). The book so inspired Peter Thiel that he founded PayPal in an effort to get ahead of the digital currency trend. He subsequently funded various efforts, like sea-based cities (“seasteading”) and the work of Curtis Yarvin, a monarchist neoreactionary whose anti-democracy ideas have gained influence within the Trump administration. When The Sovereign Individual was reissued in 2020, Thiel wrote the preface. Leading crypto evangelists such as Coinbase chief executive Brian Armstrong and its former chief technology officer Balaji Srinivasan now openly discuss their plan to create a world of post-national “network states”. These would be corporate-controlled territories backed by crypto and tech billionaires like Thiel. Tett notes in her piece that crypto enables us to “imagine alternatives to the financial and geopolitical status quo”. The alternatives favoured by the crypto elites are extreme and dystopian....
