as we were packing up to leave, i was worried we wouldn’t see any bears on our last day in haines after seeing them every day luckily, as we loaded up to leave, skinny dip (i think that’s her) came by to see us off until next time 🫶🏼
beautiful thimbleberry and mushroom spot in haines where the cold glacier water runs into the ocean there’s sockeye spawning here right now

i love the way that people and bears coexist in haines feels like there’s more fear about bears in sitka, while in haines they’re like, “yeah, that’s chomper—he lives here. just keep an eye out for him” and chomper is SO SMART! when tourists drive by he hides in the grass so they can’t see him 😂

haines has lovebombed me also, found the biggest chicken of the woods patch… so far
this bear has become my vacation buddy. we see him almost daily. this morning, he scared me on my way from the outhouse, and he made his pre-twilight visit tonight see you in the morning, buddy!
found another patch of golden chanterelles and a white eagle feather today (mushroom in the pic is the size of my 🤚🏼)

went for a walk before dinner and found a white eagle feather near some golden chanterelles feelin’ real sacred right now 😌
it’s the chilkoot river weir. counts how many sockeye return to spawn there’s a small bridge that extends across it so fish & game can manage and fix it when needed the bridge isn’t open to the public, but bears can’t read the signs and go on it 🤷🏻♀️

there’s an itty bitty bit of snow still showing on the far mountain tops
i’m told the boars (male bears) are further up the river eating salmon… the mama bears + cubs and young boars get pushed down this way to stay safe
those four cubs look like a handful but they listen well… unless mom sneaks off to eat salmon by herself

i think it’s important that we, native corp shareholders and tribal members, also learn the types of businesses that we’re invested in we do a lot of government contracting—especially our native corps—and building detention centers is something i’d prefer my corp not to get involved with
this is why economic development (hustle) is so important for tribes gotta find new ways to fund our governments, programs, services, and growth… because it’s not enough to rely on treaty obligations (gov funding/grants)

sockeye already came and went in sitka. we got a bunch and processed them (pics) the salmon in the rivers right now are chums, cohos, and chinooks the blue salmon looks like a chum

i don’t have time to respond to all the comments, got firewood to chop and berries to pick today but here’s a screenshot from another video i took of the salmon it’s got a blue/green top and white/pink belly

Sitka was briefly the capital of ‘Russian America’ in Alaska—so a lot of us worried that history would repeat itself here… 158 years after Russia sold stolen land to the United States, without informing or consulting the Native Tlingit people—much like they’re doing with the Ukrainian people today

I LOVE THIS SO MUCH!! sitka is full of such wonderful culture, history, and an incredible sense of community i would love to see a pre-contact meal, menu, or restaurant in our town. we have tourists that come here from all over the world and this is something i’d definitely recommend to them
local tlingit, mary goddard, is a doing 90 day native foods only challenge she eats only pre-contact foods that can harvested in alaska recently, a local native-owned restaurant (ludvig's bistro) in sitka created a pre-contact meal for her so she could enjoy a beautiful dinner with her fam

look at all that salmon
i love living in a community where kids bring their fishing gear to the playground so they can catch salmon after playing basketball or on the swings (please encourage your kids to pick up any trash they see down there. lots of ppl are littering, so we ask the kids to help keep this area clean)
our salmon supervisor panzer watched us can sockeye without getting into any/causing mischief he got halibut as a reward after everything was done
this small town sure can be beautiful sometimes (inside and out)
also got a great show from a very happy humpback today dude was jumping out of the water like a salmon
then the sun comes out and reminds you that healing is worth going through those challenging moments
spent some much needed time on the water today ☺️ there’s a sense of peace that i get being on these waters that i haven’t found anywhere else… and this pic from today reminds me a lot about healing—straddling that fine line between growth and choosing light (healthy) over darkness (unhealthy)

tlingit & haida (tribe) just sent out text and email tsunami alerts to tribal citizens
when there’s a lot of tourists in sitka, the town loses cell reception for the day, so we don’t get mobile alerts luckily, they test the tsunami sirens daily here (at noon), so we’d know if there was any danger incoming

here’s a detailed list of their stops a lot of passengers were excited to go through the panama canal. they told me the suez canal was also supposed to be a stop, but they were rerouted due to the conflict between iran and israel
the peace boat recently came to sitka and i got to meet a lot of the passengers and practice my japanese they’ve been on this cruise for 3 months and are nearing the end of it as you can see, they traveled to some of the most beautiful places in the world, so obviously sitka was on the list
i’d like to see him run for dan sullivan’s seat in congress 🤔
