A bunch of Latinx writers were former classroom teachers who pursued writing as a full-time career. Many of us, due to the lack of movement in publishing have had to return to the classroom, myself included. I left teaching 20 yrs ago, but I'm back bc freelancing doesn't have health insurance.

Americorps helped return $83 million to working class Americans through their tax return assistance program. Weird how the Trump admin cut the program that helped poor people pay fewer taxes, while bending over backwards to give massive tax breaks to billionaires. Very populist.

Recently met a HS grad whose Americorps job suddenly disappeared when the entire program was axed in April. 2025 budget for it was $1.3 billion. When he got the news, he was on his way to Texas to paint low income houses. He'd been helping people living in poverty to prepare tax returns before that.

I also used to live by a nature preserve between 2 rivers in FL and would see herons and egrets and sandhill cranes regularly. It’s one of the few things I miss from FL. (swamp/marsh nature, friends and family)

NEW—Earlier this evening agents from ICE/other fed agencies were outside Rhode Island Ave metro in DC asking people exiting the station for their IDs, per someone who experienced it. When the person presented their Real ID license, an agent said that wasn't sufficient. Luckily they had secondary ID.
