They were literally at the Xbox showcase in the most awkward way possible and were ready enough to have demos for two major conventions. I have a friend who just put out a game and had to push it back 3 days and he's a solo dev that stuff happens.
Yeah that game deserves better. Hollow Knight is the bigger franchise. Shinobi in its 30+ year history has about 5 million sales compared to Hollow Knight alone which has roughly 15 million sales for its single release.
I think people over estimate the scope just because "3 people" made the game. It does nobody any good deifying them. We can have more winners in the game industry with better communication.
The most wishlisted game on steam of all time will do that. With GTA 6 Rockstar gave a release date a year in advance. That comparison alone speaks volumes to the scope of how large this game has gotten. TC have money and options very few other indies have. Multiple things can be true.
That's exactly why its not an insane take because being ideologically driven when you have funding secured to work on your next project indefinitely gives you more options. Its not insane to be responsible with your power and influence. They don't have shareholders to appease just themselves.
Its the difference between the sweaty nerds who were making the clown makeup memes vs the entire games media ecosystem taking in and making a full effort pumping out pieces and content in a way that plays on FOMO to fight for the scraps of attention we give them. Its smart marketing.
These things are deliberate choices made to expand on their hype and continue to enrich themselves while sucking oxygen out of the space from every other game. They could've given other game devs a better chance to alter plans if they were more forthright back in June.
Because they should care about the industry's health. Becoming a shark that becomes too big for the pond destroys some level of the health of an ecosystem. Being communicative and cooperative is meaningful. Its not an accident they had booths and demos at two shows this month.
It's not just Indies though like Shinobi coming in at $30 last week. I've spoken my piece on this and Team Cherry feel selfish with this two week out announcement just to drum up hype. It could've been at the Xbox show in June and this situation could've been alleviated further across the industry.

This series has incredible art and some cool concepts there's horror and awesome action and I think it's been a real honor to read. Some of the plot points may be derivative but I see a bright future for Yonemoto sensei.
