The secret of Nimh
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
What was Carville right about? Genuine question as I was only born in the 80s
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
The funny thing about these sentiments is that I actually think the inverse is true. They definitely weren't making shows like Shameless or always sunny in Philadelphia back then. And definitely not Hannah Gatsby's Nanette
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
I worked at the BBC for a time and yes went through one of the full on rehearsals for that eventuality. It was very meticulously prepared for.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
Does that beat out Sting in Dune?
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
Something happening to Vance or Miller would be more of a black swan event
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
Sounds like a sci Fi movie premise...what would you do if you suddenly found yourself transported back to Aug 28 2001
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
I know this isn't the main point but hasn't he spent like half of those 200 days on vacation?
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
Also maybe this could be solved by not having a swat team come running as a result from any random phone call? Like maybe only OTHER police can call in for a swat team or something.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
It's been nearly 30 years since Blair's election....
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
To be honest, i sort of suspect that by 2032 you are either no longer a democracy, or if you are, you have (rightly) jettisoned the whole electoral college system and ideally expanded Congress as well.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
I wouldn't be surprised if the eventual 2028 nominee is someone we don't even know yet. No one knew who Mamdani was 6 months ago. And now is the time in which years last decades. 2028 is VERY far away
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
Putting aside the fact that these aren't distractions, but instead multiple concurrent, democracy-ending scandals - using the military to take over the biggest cities is very much part of the plan. The Epstein scandal is the annoying "distraction" from that plan.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
"would only be used if Texas Republicans follow through with the new congressional map" --- why? Just do it anyway. Or better yet do it unless a federal bill is passed ensuring that ALL states have to go with maps made by a third party unrelated to who is in power.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
bah..."voting"
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
You might have this backwards. The left is actually quite used to coting for whoever wins the primary. It's "finding common ground" with the republicans that leads to electoral defeat again and again. Also, I think in this context "realpolitik" means the opposite of what you are suggesting
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
Even if it were true.....what's wrong with huge solar farms? You can still grow crops underneath....they aren't ugly like a massive oil refinery.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
I felt in 2010 Labour was punished for Iraq and the banking crisis rather than anything Brown himself had done as leader. When ironically I think Brown and Darling actually navigated the financial crisis really well. Also I think it's very hard for any party to win four elections in a row.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
Gordon Brown or Jimmy Carter?
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
I genuinely don't even understand what the friend was trying to imply with that comment.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
So was Sol Wachtler wrong? You can't actually indict a ham sandwich?
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
So that's how close Icarus got
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't understand this worrying over whether we are socially excluding people whose politics are based on exclusion.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
You take that number and then read "$40 billion dollars per year to feed all of the world’s hungry people and end global hunger by 2030."
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
Read the Ender books as a young teenager going to university early. So it definitely resonated. But as I read further in the series the drop in quality and.... intrusion of his politics became difficult not to notice.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
I was going to say, was it intentional that they chose the CEO who was actually way, way worse in this respect?
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
Actually I think this is a really good comparison.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
That got me too. How did they know anything was wrong?
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't think its because of the tariffs.... Unless you are traveling from Waterloo to San Fran with a few tons of steel in your carry on.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
Is this aimed at people complaining about Cooper? Or Dems worried about Mamdani. Because I think one of those groups need to hear and understand this a lot more than the other.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
Congratulations!
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
No. Surely this is satire. This IS a joke, right?
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
I feel like this gets the framing entirely backwards. It's not extraordinary what Colbert did. It's what many late night show hosts do and it SHOULD be expected. What WAS exceptional/extraordinary was Trump's efforts to get him fired for it. It's not about Colbert - it's about Trump.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
1999 was an exceptionally strong year for movies. I feel like most movies that came out could have had a beat picture nom in any other year.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
I think this is the first Star Wars ranking I have seen that I agree with 100%
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
I mean, obviously those people exist since Mamdani didn't get 💯 of the vote and Cuomo got 36%. That's....how democracy works. And you are absolutely allowed to share your reasons why you did or didn't vote for someone. And others are allowed to draw conclusions about those reasons.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
I am still personally pro dropping the voting age - but more for reasons of - I think everyone who wants to vote should be able to. But thanks for sharing that article showing that the actual impact on voting participation may well be negligible.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
Very interesting thank you!
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
So the initial impact might not be too significant, but over years and decades of young people being more accustomed to voting the collective impact could be much more. That said, this calculus depends a lot on how difficult it is to vote for an 18 year old. Which may differ in the UK.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
A reason I've heard FOR lowering is that voting is habit-forming. So if your first vote is easy you are likely to vote in subsequent elexs. It can be a lot easier to vote at 16 when you are still at your parents vs 18 when you have moved off for Uni. And this impact carries forward for years to come
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
Frankly my dear, I don't give Edam
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
There is nothing to deflect from... As we keep telling you - what Mamdani put down was correct. You personally may not like it (which says a lot). But this is a non-story. How this information came to be, and why the NYT decided to publish it is FAR more revealing about systems and those in power.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
My only issue with "Musk doing this" is that at the time Musk was going to University of Pennsylvania I don't think he had any US ties. He was just African-African. But the only reason any of us know anything about this is because Columbia Uni got hacked...which imo is actually a much bigger story
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
What do you mean? He answered the application as well as he could. He was born in Africa into an Indian family - to vastly oversimplify the experience of families like Mamdani's - so his answer was correct. It's simply not an easy thing to answer in a box checking exercise.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
But he didn't get in!!! I feel like that little fact completely upends whatever point they think they are making. Also writing in "Born in Uganda" makes it clear that he was trying to be as honest as possible. As for Elon, being born in SA is actually pretty significant visa-wise
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
I always thought the VBNMW crowd had it backwards. If you will vote blue now matter who, then great! Let the people who DO have an opinion go first and you follow them. If you actually want to maximize the vote then you should vote for the chosen candidate of those whose votes aren't locked in.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
It still bothers me that Wheel of Time got cancelled but Rings of Power is still going
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
"and the guts to take on anyone who stands in the way" I mean surely that applies far more to Mamdani than Cuomo...
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
Use it for what exactly?
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
This was my first thought. Haven't they said on camera how much they hate having to do the work?
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
This is the biggest one for me. Because whatever they are insinuating with about the "newsworthyness" of this didn't even work.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
Is this genuine bestseller or some corporate entity bulk buys copies to make it a bestseller.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
It's not about the normal modes of operating. It's well beyond that now. But having solid evidence that the current administration may be illegitimate may definitely impact people's behavior. So much of what they are doing isn't legal on its face but dependent on compliance. This could change that.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
Not re-litigating the past is part of how we got here. I think if it looks like there is real evidence they manipulated the vote then we should know.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
Starting to wonder if this will play out like Zac Goldsmith vs Sadiq Khan in London
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
I keep seeing stuff like this, "Biggest investigation in history had to be perfect." ...but why? The current administration is clearly not bothering to have even coherent cases before detaining people. And there were so many chargeable offences that were basically open and shut.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
I mean ideally this is where robots/AI would come in. But for now they seem determined to use it to steal people's art
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
I am still stuck on the "issue" of lower birth rates. Barring some sort of Children of Men scenario isn't this...a good thing? Or was I unusual in being raised to believe that overpopulation was a problem?
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
I had a joke about tantalus, it's just on the tip of my tongue.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
Or alternatively they show up and declare "We're here to save the whales. You lot are on your own."
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
The article itself however will give me nightmares
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
This made me look up Stanislav Petrov. For this alone....Thank you.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
Didn't Bezos kind of do that with Lord of the Rings? [Goes back to weeping about Wheel of Time]
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
I remember 30 years ago saving up money as a kid to buy a $50 game. Today, best games cost...$80? Or get a fun indie game on steam for like $10. Versus spending much more than that for 2 hours at the cinema. I feel like gaming is one of the few things that has not become expensive.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent

This was exactly my thought...
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
Because a 60 ton tank might not make it over some of those bridges?
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
Are we not treating the Foundation series as philosophy?
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
I initially read this as discrepancies in the 2000 election and thought it was more interesting.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
To whoever created this graphic - this is one of the best ways I have ever seen to capture this sort of data. Well done.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
That was my thought too
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
I feel like maybe we are operating under different definitions of the word "fight"
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
It might though if voters across the country see that Dems are more willing to fight... After Schumer's or Jeffries antics I can see a lot of people thinking - what's the point in voting Dem if they don't do anything. Replace Schumer with AOC and maybe a lot more people think it's worth it to vote
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
If they "easily win reelection" then it shouldn't really matter if they are primaried right?
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
As a Vancouver resident - I am wondering if we might be getting a few more games....
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
What if it was changeable? So it could say "Welcome to Chicago/New York/Wakanda/District 12/Asgard" or whatever happens to be filmed in Vancouver that week.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
That seems like an ...odd priority to have. Surely whatever you decide to do "will make the story" since you are the one in power. So why not just do whatever you think is most effective (or most moral). Unless this is what they actually want to do...
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
Honest question - why is a government with a triple digit majority and a complete collapse in the opposition running so scared of minor parties?
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
I first read this as "Who wants to eat a millionaire?"
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
how is 1) actually an argument against? "It will probably fail" - So? Worst case you tie up congress voting on impeachment rather than voting on killing Medicare. Even if all it does is waste time - that's actually a good thing. And - raising awareness of how NOT OK any of this is a good thing
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
Not saying I agree. But this did make me laugh.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
I mean - why would you be letting DOJ nominees through anyway...
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
looks at home ownership... Ah yes that's what brings us down.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
It's supposed to be co-hosted across NA. So maybe they just move the US games to Canada or Mexico...
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
Seriously though if DHS just showed him clips from the Rock and pretended they had reopened Alcatraz. Would he know?
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
Just wanted to say thank you - this was an incredible thread.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
I was going to say - that's larger than I am completely comfortable with...
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
Secondly - I think these are ridings where Libs are currently behind (but only by a few votes so could presumably flip them). In other words for the Lib/Con ridings they are currently already IN the Con column but would flip to Lib if they are lucky with the remaining votes.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
I think some of them are NDP/Lib ridings
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
I doubt any deals will actually happen - BUT it is conceivable that deals could be in parallel. So it could be nothing for 60 days and then a flurry of deals all at once. Not an actual deal per 5 days. I think the bigger issue is that - if there are any - they won't necessarily be GOOD deals.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
Ok genuine question what is so special about the rights deal to this movie? What was done differently?
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
I think you vastly underestimate how popular Cricket is - in breadth of countries as well number of fans. I am Canadian and I know who Tendulkar is - but never heard of this Jared fellow. But I guess the main thing is how strikingly non-intersecting American vs Global concept of sports is.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
Follow up - I wonder which would be the first country to openly suggest that the US is not a suitable host and/or threaten to pull out of the tournament.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
I genuinely wonder how many games are going to get quietly moved to Canada or Mexico... 2026 feels a long way away given how much has happened since January.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
I think this is one of the most depressing aspects is that there are actually quite a few recent or even ongoing examples from around the world on what to do when your leader starts the slide to autocracy.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
Even funnier if you know who Scheer is.
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
I mean if you run govt like a business wouldn't you just absolutely skyrocket taxes?
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
I have missed out....
Alan Worsley (@alanworsley.bsky.social) reply parent
All joking aside didn't AOC actually do this with Among Us?
