Generally speaking it’s like We can call ourselves Indians, but others cannot. We’re Natives, Native American or Indigenous. It gets stickier and I don’t want to imply things about other people, but no, do NOT use ‘American Indian’ either, even if your “Indian friend” says it’s okay.
But the best way to avoid awkwardness is just ask and an ask is sooo appreciated because it also shows an effort to learn and can open doors to actual community building.
When you see First Nations being referenced, it's usually in regards to Canada because First Nations, Indigenous, Aboriginal, Inuit, Metis, Indian or Status Indian are the legal terms that they use. Socially, it's basically the same as here in the US.
For non-Natives its best to stay clear of Indian and First American unless it is an individual's preference or the formal name of a nation or organization. The last one mainly because we come from people older than America and were not considered US citizens until 1924. It's erasure two-fold IMO.
But here's a little primer. American Indian, Native American & Indian are legal terms used in the U.S, more formal situations which we didn't have a choice in. Socially, it gets wild and even more heated. Native, NDN, Indian, Native American, American Indian, Indigenous, specific tribal identity
Did you know NONE of us have ever had the honor of self-naming? Indians? Christopher Colombo. American Indian? U.S. govt. Native American? Buncha white historians who thought American Indian was too confusing. Indigenous? Always meant global. Native to me is the first time we’ve all self-named.
For Natives: Indigenous should only be used when speaking on a generic global scale. We CANNOT afford to lose our specificity in this country. It will lead to FURTHER ERASURE AND GENOCIDE. If you MUST, say “Indigenous People of Turtle Island.” But I prefer Native.
