There is no battle to lose, just constant influence. I think of the Alita manga that swipes Elektra Lives Again, or Moebius and Otomo's mutual appreciation society. Yasuhiro Nightow's love affair with US comics. Global comics is a katamari ball of indescribable scale and influence. That's all I got.
The manga influence on American comics is long. Frank Miller credits reading Lone Wolf & Cub as a huge influence on his work, and you can see how it pushed him in interesting directions. Absolute Batman's Nick Dragotta speaks similarly of Tsutomu Nihei. Batman is as mainstream as it gets, right? 🧵
On the ground, I don't think it's manga vs comics. It's all the same, with different origins and preferences to take into account. Sometimes I don't want to read about magic teenagers. Sometimes capes are annoying. Is it really direct competition? Or is it more like Final Fantasy vs Apex Legends? 🧵
If manga should terrify in direct competition, what's the move? Make cape comics more like Jump? Re-create the assistants system outside of Tokyo? If the goal is making new Spider-Mans, how do you measure it? It feels like a race with an impossible finish and the runners are all on the same team. 🧵
I feel like the American comics vs Japanese comics argument really misses the mark a lot of the times. It's not versus on the ground, is it? My little sister likes Batman Hush and Demon Slayer about the same amount, to hear her tell it. Who benefits from the conflict? What does manga win? 🧵

with peace and love, I'm pretty deeply invested in American comics and Japanese comics both, and I'm not sure that pitting them against each other has ever been the answer. I'm still developing a strong take, but it feels like asking if Cinnamon Toast Crunch is beating cheeseburgers in the polls.

Someone on twitter commented that a bunch of these are the "Scaring the hoes" one shots of Fujimoto's career and I agree with them that it's great that those are getting high end adaptations. Drive out the weak, slim down the fanbase so it be truly decimated by the Fire Punch anime

Tatsuki Fujimoto is a maniac and I'm glad he's found so much fame and success just following his muse in whatever direction it happens to take him
Whatever else you can say about Tatsuki Fujimoto, that man has clearly mastered the art of the page turn
Fujimoto's definitely definitely up there with Urasawa and Ito as manga artists who clearly think a lot about how the reader is going to read their stories. Even his short one shots have excellent pacing and layout, always ready to wallop you in the face
I know he's not dead, but as an unemployed guy who has nothing to do but sit at home all day on the computer, I can see how conspiracy theories could become a pretty thrilling pastime.

That's the other part that always gets me. There are so many reasons for why the US and JP comics industries are seeing such different forms of success that have nothing to do with the cincis themselves, but you'd never know that from these handwringing articles
I think I'd take these articles more seriously if they didn't all come across as "you too should be like Kentaro Miura: riddled with health problems and dead at 54" I also want American comics to do better, but maybe find a less famously exploitive system to say they should emulate
