Yeah. We have a moral responsibility to our neighbors and community members. Even when there's a genocide happening, that doesn't mean I should let someone on my street get killed by a car.

Oh that's perfect! The question is whether to switch the genders? Would "degrowth son or abundance daughter" be better?
Andrew (@andrew-again.bsky.social) reply parent
Okay actually, after reading your post, I am looking at it a little differently. Like you, I'm disappointed that the interview didn't happen. I am concerned that stuff like this can hurt solidarity between allied groups. But ultimately, you're right. It's good to work through things together.
Andrew (@andrew-again.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm sorry about this whole thing - it's the sort of situation that screws a lot of well-meaning people over in a lot of different groups.

Yeah, I know MultCo publishes precinct results on the SOS website downloadable as a spreadsheet. It's weird that not everybody does that. Like they already have the data. If you FOIA requested it, it should be free. But then why don't they just upload it!!
Andrew (@andrew-again.bsky.social)
Weird pull, but Congress during McCarthyism showed how much a legislative body can do in an investigative capacity (with the side effect of ruining lots of lives). What if we did that for an actually good cause though. Like this.
Andrew (@andrew-again.bsky.social) reply parent
And you fs knew this
Andrew (@andrew-again.bsky.social) reply parent
The bigger counties publish precinct results which you can get in a big spreadsheet, but then you'd still have to find and add up all the precincts in a given district. I tried something like this and it's a pain.

The three policies I referred to are the underpaid part-time legislature, the 2/3 quorum, and the supermajority for tax increases. I know this is complicated, but we can agree that fixing any one would have improved the chance of a good transportation package this year. 3/3
Andrew (@andrew-again.bsky.social) reply parent
I know there are lawmakers doing bad things and/or doing things badly - but those are not the ones that come on Bluesky to interact with us. You can never get rid of every evil or incompetent politician, but you can have a system that works better and gives them less leverage. 2/3
Andrew (@andrew-again.bsky.social)
People that care about Oregon politics are resigned, angry, or both right now (as this thread shows). Lawmakers and Oregonians are being held hostage by three bad legislative rules. I hope this mess can be used to build some momentum for fixing those rules. 1/3

It's 2am here 🫣. But no, you obviously feel the importance of this as much as many Oregonians, and that's really reassuring. My wish would be for the same urgency to come through from more legislators. If you have clones in other house districts or something, lmk

Whenever I feel bad about city politics, I remind myself it's somehow way better than the Salem Sphere
Andrew (@andrew-again.bsky.social) reply parent
I understand - ultimately, the supermajority tax increase thing is to blame. If Congress had that, they would fully collapse. In spite of my disappointment with the party, I know a lot of you are doing good work and dealing with hard situations. There's just so little margin for error as it stands.
Andrew (@andrew-again.bsky.social) reply parent
Tina, I'm not sure if we have a shared vision at all!
Andrew (@andrew-again.bsky.social) reply parent
I figure we're in different social media circles, but where I am, I'm seeing a lot more frustration with Democrats (for not wielding their supermajority effectively) than with Republicans. I get that that's harder when those Democrats are your coworkers and comrades, though.

I talked to some folks at @pdxrenterpower.bsky.social about this - even the affordable housing quotas only go down to 60% of median income. Minimum wage comes out to something like 40%. When you say "deeply affordable," I'm hearing rents viable for someone at that 40%.

It's fun to joke, but seeing a whole culture get pushed into the shadows like this is horrifying. In hard times, people can find some strength in coming together for food and music and the rest of it. Taking that away from people that are already scared is so cruel.
