Thanks, but why.…and why not Womens’ if it belongs to all the women?
Andy Chapman (@andychapman.bsky.social)
A question for all the grammarians out there. I love the Google results for the Womens Rugby but I now only get them if I call it Women’s Rugby. I think of it as Rugby with women playing rather than the Rugby that belongs to Women. So apostrophe or not?

Interesting episode. What happens if I give my AI 1% of Elon’s wealth and tell it to make me money without breaking any laws? It’s easiest approach is to influence politicians to make what it wants to do legal. Step 1: Make it illegal to turn it off. Step 2: Anything it likes.

My worry is not a crowd of drunk racists (they have been a tiny proportion of the UK all my life) but the message that what matters for media coverage and political influence is not your level of support but how violent your supporters are prepared to be.

If Trump has had a debilitating stroke, how long do you think they will keep him as a figurehead while continuing with Project 2025 in his name? I mean, that’s basically what they’ve being doing since the election anyway.

I miss principled thought through policies. This disregards the reasons for asylum laws (protecting people who escape a country that persecutes them) while also highlighting how unfair the existing minimum income limits on UK citizens are (can’t be with the person you love because you aren’t rich).

Early years education should teach teenagers to live with hormones. They’ll drive you mad with desire for the next 10 years and then try to turn you into a bigoted racist as you near retirement. Part of education is helping you ride out both of those extremes without doing anything really stupid.

Possibly a fair point on collars. Ours was a discussion about collar vs microchip so removable was off the cards. I don’t know enough about nest box usage. I assume the ones who aren’t so wary of people will use them (swifts, sparrows, tits, robins use mine). Do you have any reference info?

Raising two children costs £500,000 over 21 years Investing £500k over 21 years - Google says gives £1.4 million - a very substantial pension to cover care costs. Have kids because you’d enjoy raising nice people who look like the person you love, not to make servants. cpag.org.uk/news/cost-ch...
Andy Chapman (@andychapman.bsky.social) reply parent
Providing safe nest locations and things like exits from ponds seems more effective. Young swifts drowning while learning the “skim for a drink” technique killed more than the cats and the most frequent cause of bodies was the cats going back to the same stupidly placed nest several days in a row
Andy Chapman (@andychapman.bsky.social) reply parent
Our rural vet advised us to avoid collars (and hence bells) because of the number of cat deaths by hanging he sees. Also when my cats were young enough to hunt, their tactic was to sit still until the bird flew close enough and then jump in the air to catch them. A bell would make no difference.

That said, if it turns out the leak was because someone did something deliberately stupid (e.g. discussing war plans on Signal when they have been told not to) or covered up an honest mistake with dishonest actions then firing becomes appropriate, for exactly the same reasons.
Andy Chapman (@andychapman.bsky.social) reply parent
Enjoyed your interview with John Healey but I think your focus on no-one being fired was too much. Having dealt with security breach policies before (not MOD) you want people to immediately admit to cock-ups so you can mitigate them effectively. Firing everybody involved has the opposite effect.

Andy Chapman (@andychapman.bsky.social) reply parent
Simple. The business owners wouldn’t be arrested as illegals so would get due process. They would then get the chance to prove that the employees were actually legal. Then the employees would need to be brought back to the USA and would get compensation for false imprisonment and deportation.

Andy Chapman (@andychapman.bsky.social) reply parent
Ah! That makes sense now. I know for my air to water system there is a lot of condensation at the heat pump in winter. I had to install ground drainage as it was creating a puddle that was then freezing.

Same here. I come from a physics background (billion = 1x10E12). The other usage comes from US finance I suspect, hence why it spread so rapidly.
Andy Chapman (@andychapman.bsky.social) reply parent
If you are circulating too cold water through what used to be heating pipes you get condensation inside the building and that leads to mould and rot. Not an expert. Just doing lots of research now my ASHP is out of its Renewable Heat incentive period (when I wasn’t allowed to use the cooling).
Andy Chapman (@andychapman.bsky.social) reply parent
I couldn’t agree more. It seems insane to me that the government says “we have lots more sick people” and rather than identify causes and then solutions they just remove the support and hope the sick somehow get better.
Andy Chapman (@andychapman.bsky.social) reply parent
Fair point. I am planning to switch to ground source when my ASHPs reach end of life which I suspect would be better efficiency but I believe the main difficulty is condensation if the pipes are below the dew point, yes?
Andy Chapman (@andychapman.bsky.social) reply parent
It feels like time for a bill saying compensation should survive death (get paid into your estate) and have an interest component from the date of the crime. Otherwise there is no counterbalance to the states financial interest in the victims dying and never getting redress.
Andy Chapman (@andychapman.bsky.social) reply parent
Not too hard for homes. Super-insulation and heat pumps work in both cases.
