Ten years ago today, Sandra Bland died. She was murdered in Texas. A cop turned his car around when he saw the out of state plates and a black woman driving. He tailed her. He stalked her. And, she ended up dead, in jail. She’d done nothing wrong. I wrote this poem for her.

Just read James Purdy’s short story “Cutting Edge.” I highly recommend seeking out his work. A tome including every single story was published in 2013. “Cutting Edge” can be found in the 1957 issue of Evergreen Review which is available as a facsimile.

When I was elementary school aged I walked by myself ¾ of a mile to a convenience store to buy my father cigarettes. Granted the cigarettes weren’t a good idea. I’ve measured on Google maps the distance because I thought maybe I had exaggerated it over the years.
