I think it's useful to unpack this. If Democrats agree with Republicans on excluding women's sports, what's the harm? Is it primarily harm to trans women who play sports, or is there something more to it? A reasonable person who doesn't know much about trans issues could ask these questions.
I do wish people would treat transphobia as the serious red flag it is, because if someone is repeating bullshit pseudoscience talking points from right wing cranks, that's just as bad as conceding to anti-vax nonsense and undermining trust in science and medicine, alarm bells should be sounding!

My conclusion, I think, is the same as Sexton's - those who oppose fascism should organize, gather, encourage each other, support the underprivileged, and commit to opposition of authoritarianism. Regardless of who the authority is.
The People are pushing back, letting their Congresscritters know in no uncertain terms that what the executive is doing is unacceptable. People are being loud and critical - too many people for the fascists to easily shut us down. Without intimidation, a fascist administration cannot succeed.
Many of our institutions have been cowed into submission, the press and universities for example. And there are always some who are apathetic. But not many, it seems. People are out in the streets, resisting, getting into federal agents' faces, becoming folk heroes with a hero...
Some are willing to do violence for this fascist administration. ICE's Gestapo-lite are willing to bust into people's cars, pull firefighters off of a raging forest fire, even drag parents away from crying children. They are committed enough to sacrifice their own humanity for fascism.
Fascists succeed when some are committed to the cause to the point of being willing to do violence, many are cowed into submission, more are apathetic and very few are committed to opposition to the point of being willing to suffer violence.
There are different measures of popularity: the number of people who approve, the depth of commitment those who approve have. And then there's the counterpart, the number of people who disapprove and their depth of commitment.
I disagree with this one statement - I think that popularity does figure into it. The People hold the ultimate power in any society. There is no way a few thousand can make 340 million do what they are determined not to do.
