happy #smallpoemsunday! 💜 feel free to join by posting small poems you wrote, +/or small poems you love by somebody else :) here’s one by Bill Corbett; Peter Reading called this kind of poem the 13-line sonnet for unlucky people—& what an 11th line, “every green thing goldens”

AUGUST I want to read and nap and wake fresh to read some more and further out there is a raft off which kids clown and cannonball and beyond a straggle of mergansers steam serenely and then an empty lake and further still over all the points and hills every green thing goldens and last, clouds press the mountain’s rough nib.

A sprawling, textured field of galaxies scattered across the deep black of space. It is filled with the delicate smudges and glowing cores of galaxies of many shapes, sizes and colors, as well as the bright multi-colored points of stars. The image focuses on a collection of interacting galaxies connected by delicate streams of stars. At top center lies a large elliptical galaxy that is dense and smooth, like a polished stone glowing with golden light. Like delicate spider silk or stretched taffy, these stellar bridges link the large elliptical to the few larger galaxies beneath, evidence of past collisions. All throughout the image, thousands of galaxies gather in clusters or are spread throughout, like glittering gems strewn on a table. Some are sharp-edged and spiral, like coiled ribbons; others round and diffuse, like polished pebbles. Still others are just smudges of various colors against the black of space. The background is peppered with pinpoint stars in reds, yellows, and blues, crisp against the velvet black. A cosmic tapestry of glowing tan and pink gas clouds with dark dust lanes. In the upper right, the Trifid Nebula resembles a small flower in space. Its soft, pinkish gas petals are surrounded by blue gas, and streaked with dark, finger-like veins of dust that divide it into three parts. It radiates a gentle, misty glow, diffuse and soft like the warmth of breath on a cold hand. To the lower left, the much larger Lagoon Nebula stretches wide like a churning sea of magenta gas, with bright blue, knotted clumps sprinkled throughout where new stars are born. Both nebulae are embedded in a soft tan backdrop of gas that is brighter on the left than on the right, etched with dark tendrils of dust and sprinkled with the pinpricks of millions of stars. A sprawling, textured field of galaxies scattered across the deep black of space. It is filled with the delicate smudges and glowing cores of galaxies of many shapes, sizes and colors, as well as the bright multi-colored points of stars. To the lower left is a region filled with the hundreds of golden glittering gems of a distant galaxy cluster. In the foreground, below and right of center, two blue spiral galaxies look like eyes beneath the entangled mass of a triple galaxy merger in the upper right. A few bright blue points of foreground stars pierce the glittering tapestry. Physicist and astronomer Willem de Sitter was born #OTD in 1872. He is best known for his work in Cosmology, applying Einstein’s general relativity to the dynamics and history of the universe, and also for strong "Jude Law as young Dumbledore" vibes. 🧪 🔭 ⚛️ Image: history.aip.org/exhibits/cos...

A sepia tinted photograph of Willem de Sitter standing next to the eyepiece of a large telescope. He is wearing a suit with jacket and vest, a white collared shirt with a black bow tie, and a dark as well as a dark fedora. A watch fob extends from one of the vest's button holes to a pocket. De Sitter's left hand is in his pants pocket and his right arm rests on a ledge on the wall of the telescope dome. He is looking directly at the camera; part of the telescope instrumentation is between him and the camera but he is peering over it. De Sitter has a neatly trimmed beard and appears to have a cigar or cigarette in the corner of his mouth. A very strong

BREAKING: Judge Richard Myers rules that the N.C. Supreme Court's handling of the state supreme court election violated the U.S. Constitution. The win for Justice Riggs, a Democrat, is to be certified. Today's ruling stayed for 7 days for Judge Griffin, a Republican, to appeal "if he so chooses."

This consolidated action concerns an attempt to change the rules of the game after it had been played. The court cannot countenance that strategy, see Hendon, 710 F.2d at 182; Toney, 476 F.2d at 209, which implicates the very integrity of the election and offends D. Judge Griffin's motions for injunctive relief [DE 1-5; DE 1-13] are DENIED; E. Justice Riggs' motion for injunctive relief [DE 37] is GRANTED; F. The VoteVets Action Fund Parties' motion for summary judgment [DE 86] is GRANTED 6, G. The NCDP's request for injunctive relief [DE 78] is GRANTED; H. The Conley Plaintiffs' request for a permanent injunction [DE 82] is GRANTED; I. Final judgment is ENTERED: In Griffin Il, judgment is ENTERED in favor of the State Board, Justice Riggs, and the VoteVets Action Fund Parties as to the issues identified in Findings 1, 2, and 3; ii. In NCDP, judgment is ENTERED in favor of the NCDP as to the issues identified in Findings 1, 2, and 3; and iii. In Conley, judgment is ENTERED in favor of the Conley Plaintiffs as to the issues identified in Findings 1 and 2.28 The court's order is STAYED for 7 days, so that Judge Griffin may pursue an appeal if he so chooses. SO ORDERED this 5th day of May, 2025. PaulIMin RICHARD E. MYERS II CHIEF UNITED STATES DISTRICT JUDGE

Sometimes people say things like “modern medicine is responsible for our lifespan increase,” but our understanding of modern medicine includes having clean water, food that doesn’t kill you, and a basic understanding of the major ways that not getting certain chemicals fucks you up.”

Tariffs are a tax on consumers. Today's example: prom dresses. There are a lot of pissed off teenagers right now, including the one in this household.

We want to inform you about important changes regarding tariffs on goods imported from China. Due to new government regulations, import taxes into the U.S. will significantly increase effective May 2, 2025. While President Trump has announced that tariffs will not reach 145%, they will not be reduced to zero either. At this time, we are unable to provide the exact tariff rates, but we will keep you updated as more information becomes available. We are actively working on long-term solutions to minimise the impact of these changes and to restore HNTR to normal operations as quickly as possible. Please note that not all our products are made in China, so if you are interested in a specific item, feel free to reach out to confirm its country of origin. All gowns are ready for dispatch and will be shipped once we receive confirmation that you are aware of and willing to pay the import taxes on your goods upon arrival in the U.S. To proceed, please respond to this email with your consent so we can expedite the shipping of your order. Please be aware that we do not control these fees, and HNTR cannot be held responsible for customers who fail to pay import taxes; refunds will not be issued in such cases.

I just gave my very fantasy-averse mother a copy of Small Gods, and she read it in a day and actually enjoyed it. She likes mysteries, so I'll probably nudge her towards the Night Watch series next.

CRAZY new image from #JWST of a distant spiral wrapped around a foreground elliptical through gravitational lensing - perfectly aligned, forming a perfect Einstein ring. A serendipitous discovery led by G. Mahler of @universitedeliege.bsky.social 🇧🇪 🔭 Image credit: ESA/Webb, NASA & CSA, G. Mahler

In the centre is an elliptical galaxy, seen as an oval-shaped glow around a small bright core. Around this is wrapped a broad band of light, appearing like a spiral galaxy stretched and warped into a ring, with bright blue lines drawn through it where the spiral arms have been stretched into circles. A few distant objects are visible around the ring on a black background. (Image credit: ESA/Webb, NASA & CSA, G. Mahler)
