my first instinct when starting was "why don't we throw it all away and just start over", which with time turned into the realization that if we started over from scratch we'd spend the next five years fixing the issues we fixed over the past twenty
I hate how true this is. I've done tons of work on a legacy codebase and while it's brittle, there are years and years of edge cases that evolved to fix a particular problem whose source is lost to time, but will undoubtedly rear its head if you naively try to rewrite it from scratch
The one lesson that nobody in tech seems willing to believe without experience is that every legacy system carries a *huge* amount of systems knowledge that almost nobody can easily replicate. Some best practices gleaned from experts passing through, but mostly a vast history of natural selection.
