my first instinct when starting was "why don't we throw it all away and just start over", which with time turned into the realization that if we started over from scratch we'd spend the next five years fixing the issues we fixed over the past twenty

It took me a decade to realize what “software engineering” actually is. It’s not designing the system. It’s not writing the code. It’s figuring out how to get from one codebase (maybe nothing) to another. That’s the ENTIRE DISCIPLINE. Yet people still want to yadda-yadda over the whole process.
