Before anyone ever blames an editor for a book's quality, let me remind you that the author has the final say. I had a developmental editing client who showed me their next draft and it was clear they used approximately zero of my big picture suggestions. You paid me and didn't use any feedback.
Once again, I am forced to reflect upon the discussion about how there are skim readers who scan for the dialogue between the "FMC" and "MMC" to get to the "good parts" - then howl when they don't understand a book, or miss all of the clues telling you this isn't a romance series and someone dies.
