Very agree. I think you can know the real life of people by visiting the places without tourists. Japan is one of countries with over-tourism. I love to visit quiet places without tourists because I want to feel Zen-like stillness at temples & shrines.
Gotokuji is one of my favorite places. I visit there at least twice per year. I have the biggest cat in my room, lol. 😆

My neighbor, 15 minutes by the train from Shinjuku, is rare place to see this kind of ceremony almost every month. In your next trip, I recommend you to visit the area near shrines & temples. I love suburb of Tokyo.
