My grandparents are in their late 80's. My grandma reads (or listens to audio books) every day. My grandpa does not. The difference in their cognition is striking. "Use it or lose it" applies to your brain too.

There are probably other fossilized coral rocks found on shores around the world, but Petoskey stones specifically can only be found around Lake Michigan!

Fun fact you can only find these in the great lakes. I think these also glow under a UV light if I'm not mistaken? But they're fossilized coral - can find em in Lake Michigan. Use a UV flashlight to spot them and Yooperlite - another special MI rock. (I like rocks) www.youtube.com/shorts/Grdc9...

What originally motivated me to go to grad school was a desire to develop a non-addictive painkiller that was as affective as opioids. My aspirations have changed in the last few years, but it’s very uplifting to see other people are working toward that regardless!

The cool thing about Microsoft Copilot is that not only does it seem to take more technical knowledge and effort than I’d consider reasonable to fully remove it from your computer, but every time your computer updates, Windows adds it back.

The Seal of Confession does not apply when the priest has reason to believe the person confessing will seriously harm themself and/or others after the sacrament is finished. These religious leaders are violating their own supposed beliefs by opposing laws like this.

#HouseofLeaves’ selection of narrators is kind of amusing. You got a guy whose own house traps him in an infinite labyrinth, and an old blind recluse who presumably gets killed by a mythological creature, but the one having the worst time is the guy just trying to get a book published.

It’s basic but the last Zampanó poem in the Appendix goes so hard. It makes the whole book come together IMO if you buy into the interpretation that Zampanó is just a character made up by Johnny and the only 100% genuine part of the entire book is his mother’s letters.

It’s definitely a great story and I loved it by the end! It’s definitely unlike anything I’ve read before and expanded my idea of what a novel can be. If I could describe the book without spoiling any of the actual content I’d call it an exercise in delayed gratification.

The risks of moderate alcohol use are less severe and more widely known than those of raw milk consumption. There also aren’t high-profile influencers and government officials telling people that the science-backed health risks are exaggerated and that alcohol is healthier than other drinks.
The Mouse Husband (@babcockchrism.bsky.social) reply parent
I don’t think you’re trying to take over the industry, I just think that if you’re going to tell the general public to drink raw milk then there should be regulations that make it as safe as pasteurized milk first. If the dairy industry is fighting it that doesn’t change my opinion.

People who safely drink raw milk often are intimately aware of the health of their cows, which requires a degree of accountability that you can’t expect from the dairy industry at large without government regulations.
The Mouse Husband (@babcockchrism.bsky.social) reply parent
This is not “unsupported opinion,” it’s the result of my own education and review of the literature, as well as the consensus of every major medical association.
The Mouse Husband (@babcockchrism.bsky.social) reply parent
Having extra safety testing for raw milk specifically could be a good workaround for the people who *really* want to drink raw milk, but until that’s already implemented, telling people to drink raw milk unambiguously does more harm than good.
The Mouse Husband (@babcockchrism.bsky.social) reply parent
It’s true that those strains are great probiotics but I don’t see how getting them through raw milk is better for you than taking probiotic supplements or eating safer probiotic foods. I also don’t see how, if it *is* somehow better, that outweighs the risk of bacterial infection.
The Mouse Husband (@babcockchrism.bsky.social) reply parent
I’m not aware of any science-backed health benefits of raw milk

The Mouse Husband (@babcockchrism.bsky.social) reply parent
You personally drinking raw milk doesn’t necessarily affect other people’s health, but influencers and government officials telling the public to drink it results in people who don’t know better to get 100% preventable bacterial infections, hospitalizations, long-term complications, and deaths.
