I think it was a mass, sudden understanding that, when it DOES happen, the government won't announce anything in an appropriate or responsible way, so the surest sign will be a sudden inexplicable silence, where usually there's constant noise.

Zuckerberg and Musk are both right that there's an enormous number of lonely people desperate for the convenient, unconditional validation that could be produced by an AI that can talk and generate video, and they're the two people on Earth I'm most terrified of addressing that problem.

The Texas redistricting will also be challenged in court, and it's fine to say "conservative courts will go along with redistricting because they don't believe in laws, and the liberal courts won't because they do." But if Newsom and Pritzker want to compete in 2028, they'll go down scratching.
Benjamin Johns (@baj.bsky.social) reply parent
There are many, many, many ways to get around judicial review. All rely to some degree on a helpful or at least compliant judiciary, willing to either side with your action or delay review of it past the window where that review is actionable. See Bush v Gore. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bush_v....
Benjamin Johns (@baj.bsky.social) reply parent
You're probably right that "liberal courts don't make ideologically driven decisions so it won't happen." But I'll be disappointed if governors and state legislatures use that as an excuse not to be as conniving and strategic and cynical as possible in getting it done.
Benjamin Johns (@baj.bsky.social) reply parent
If a Republican was faced with a friendly but not THAT friendly supreme court and a desire to redistrict, they would design a trigger to install a new map that happened exactly the instance before laws no longer permit judicial review because it is too close to the election day to change it back.
Benjamin Johns (@baj.bsky.social) reply parent
In the extreme, yes, SCOTUS could decide to just go ahead and have Governors they don't like imprisoned; there's no limit on their power. We might already be there! In practice, these are state constitutional issues, and state supreme courts, not SCOTUS, would hear them.
Benjamin Johns (@baj.bsky.social) reply parent
If Democrats can learn something from Trump it's that you can do things and not care what your constitution says and fundamentally as an executive there's no way to stop it, certainly not on a timeframe that matters.

These images are like two years behind the state of the art in image generation. Plastic, flat, nauseatingly fake. You could do better with Flux running on a MacBook, and that came out last year. If it wasn't for the "I dare you to sue me" attitude there'd be nothing to write about them at all.
Benjamin Johns (@baj.bsky.social) reply parent
This isn't true. Meta has invested billions in the Llama models which run great on a mid-tier laptop. Google has multiple features on the Pixel phones which use the on-phone LLM to work. Flux and WAN can generate video and images on any newish MacBook. These are all maybe 18 months behind SOTA.

A persistent drop like this means mass layoffs, bankruptcies, hollowing-out of tourist centers. It will be devastating to Democratic strongholds like Hawaii, but it will also be devastating to Republican strongholds like Florida. But you can't expect Marco Rubio to know anything about Florida.
Benjamin Johns (@baj.bsky.social)
The thing about tourism drops, like the 11% drop already seen in Vegas, is that a lot of it requires total utilization. Fill all the rooms, the whole theme park, every seat on the flight, or the economics don't work. A small disruption means you book at loss to get SOME revenue for that room.

This is true and why Trump "taking over the Republican party apparatus" was so destructive. There's a big contingent of voters who do not engage in politics or news at all, but their "families are Republican" the way families are "Greek" and if you can get them to a poll they're punching that box.

I don't really care anymore. The liars won. If someone miraculously figures out a way to make the truth matter again, I'll be thrilled. If someone figures out how to combat the current destructive system of lies with a different system of lies, I'll hold my nose and vote for Door Number Two.
Benjamin Johns (@baj.bsky.social) reply parent
"Discrediting the liar" doesn't work when lies are unprovable and lying is a sign of ideological purity. You're stuck trying to make the liar contemptible on other terms-- and in a world where the right is currently turning CHILD SEX TRAFFICKING into a virtue, it's not clear what terms are left.
Benjamin Johns (@baj.bsky.social) reply parent
It's a hard problem! The right convinced an electorally sufficient number of voters that there were no unbiased information sources and that being belligerently wrong is a virtue. Those voters can no longer be reasoned into changing their minds; and the voters Democrats are left with HATE that shit.

Benjamin Johns (@baj.bsky.social) reply parent
These are still low rates in the big picture-- most young men and women ARE working, thankfully. But (A) anything that improves things is going to have to target whatever's happening with men, because that's where the issue is worst, and (B) "judging them more” doesn't seem like it's helping.
Benjamin Johns (@baj.bsky.social) reply parent
Sure. It's also true that *something* is happening where young men are not finding or looking for work at much higher rates than women, and higher rates than men 20 years ago. It has long term consequences, because low employment in your twenties correlates to lifetime low employment.
Benjamin Johns (@baj.bsky.social) reply parent
I try not to be gender essentialist about it-- plenty of great male nurses and senior care workers out there. But-- yeah, it sure feels like that's the case.
Benjamin Johns (@baj.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't really know (neither does the BLS). Probably a combination of things. But given the long term trend lines and the recency of the new spike, I'd guess that a major factor is "discouraged," because it's harder than ever to get a job, and the job you CAN find pays a wage that buys you less.
Benjamin Johns (@baj.bsky.social) reply parent
Right. The intersection of that line means, if you're working OR looking for work age 22-27, you're just as likely to be looking if you're a college grad or not. But you're still significantly more likely to be employed if you're a college grad, because more non-college grads aren't looking at all.
Benjamin Johns (@baj.bsky.social) reply parent
It's worth noting (as the source does) that this is in part because there's been a similar rise in the number of young men in the age cohort who have no degree and are not attempting to work at all. (E.g., they are no longer in the "unemployed" category, they're in "Unable to work").
Benjamin Johns (@baj.bsky.social) reply parent
It has to be legally, because Democrats have no idea how to hold anyone accountable politically.
