I watch movies, read comics, buy crap I don’t need and go to the pub but I have weekends off and I am my own boss.

A young girl, trying to cope with the death of her mother, sketches monsters in her notepad. One day the notepad is thrown into a magical pond and all the monsters come to life. A surprisingly decent kids film with moments of genuine suspense and likeable characters. Worth a watch.

Comes naturally to me 😬

I recommended it to a friend in London and within 10 minutes he’d bought tickets.

McGinley is in the current version and also appeared in the 2008 Gate production (according to Wikipedia)

You’re in for a treat.

Same here.

I remember watching one of the first 4Ks I bought and my brother walked into the room and said “wow! is that in 3D or something? It’s so solid looking” I knew then I was sold.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
The Hitchcocks are amazing, the best they’ll ever look. A few dodgy titles aside (due to bad mastering) most films look incredible on the format.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
I knew nothing about 4K for years. Saw them in HMV in London once and thought it was just a gimmick. A couple of years later I got a 4K tv and then started reading up on them. The rest is history 🙄
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
Totally reignited my love for physical media which I’m not sure is a good thing as I now spend all my spare cash on movies.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
Good aul 4K 🥰

Love sci-fi. Generally a fan of the Alien franchise but this is just boring me to death although this week’s episode is definitely an improvement.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
This week’s episode is all about the crew from the first episode so at least there’s a few adults in it 🙄
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
Alien:Earth (no idea why I’m still watching so don’t ask) has resorted to the dreaded flashback for this week’s episode. The show has been so boring up to now I’d completely forgotten the great Michael Smiley was in the first episode.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah it was the kind of experience that would really make you want to go to more live theatre. Magical.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
I knew nothing about it tbh and wasn’t sure what to expect but found it very moving.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
I thought it was decent but nothing I’d be in a rush to watch again tbh. Odd tonal shifts too.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
No Irish dates though ☹️
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
I’m sorry Alan - I’ll try and be more serious in future. In serious news - I loved the play. Yours seriously etc.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
Jesus this was fantastic. I’m kind of in bits after it. Gleeson made a wonderful speech about Sean Rocks and the Olympia in general afterwards. Very moving. Londoners don’t miss it.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
I just hope they mention Gallipoli and don’t devote the whole thing to Witness and Dead Poets Society.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
Last time I was in the Olympia for a play (admittedly it’s been a few years) the seats were on top of each other and there was absolutely no legroom whatsoever. Great to see that’s no longer the case. I can actually stretch a bit 😬
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
Ah that would explain it
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
Heads up Stewart Lee fans - he’s added a 2nd Dublin date on June 2nd at the Bord Gais. I missed out completely on his Olympia date so was delighted to hear this until I remembered I’ve a holiday booked on that date. 🤬
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
I kind of want Tron: Ares to flop just so someone can write - New Tron Bombs
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
Going to see The Weir today in the, as Ray Winstone would say, fee-at-ur. Call me an uneducated fool but I can’t help feeling if I wanted to see 3 men talk nonsense in a pub I could have just gone to the pub but, hey, this is art so what do I know?
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
What a load of nonsense (the article). I’ve honestly never heard anyone talk about hating someone because they like Disney or have any kind of nerdy (said with love) hobby. This feels totally made up to me.

I’d just changed into my evening lounge wear when the bloody doorbell rang 🙄 Oh well, there goes another chunk of my dignity.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
Never heard of this before but saw some tweets recommending it after the sad passing of Greene yesterday. An odd film that starts well, meanders but rallies for a strong ending. Greene is very good and there’s an unusual, interesting atmosphere to it. Decent.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
It’s probably the only good thing anyone says about the film tbh.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
John Turturro best known as “guy sitting at table” in Raging Bull (1980)
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
Over a decade (at least!) since I last watched it but I can remember almost crying of boredom. Saying that I might be tempted to give it another look before I watch that documentary.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
I stuck in an order at that price even though - gasp! - I’ve never seen the film before. Just a sucker for a bargain I guess 🙄
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
I’m not a fan of Tron at all but I expect I’ll still go to the new movie when it opens. Until then the previous 2 films are getting a 4K release on Sep 16.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
I love a good “making of” doc so I’m looking forward to this but, dear God, the few times I’ve watched Exorcist 2 were absolute torture - it’s a truly dreadful film. Scorsese is a big fan though so what do I know?
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
I definitely noticed lines I hadn’t heard before although I always worry if that’s just me going senile. Nice ad for HelloFresh btw 😂
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
Sweetness Follows or Hairshirt So many amazing songs but I’m definitely more a fan of their mid period work - Green to New Adventures. I find some of their earlier/later releases sound a bit samey.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
The scene in Jaws right after the kids with the cardboard fin where Brody says “What now?” and his wife tells him “Michael’s in the pond” - was it always possible to hear a tannoy in the background announcing “it’s ok folks, it was only a prank…” etc.?
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
Anyone???
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah it’s been one of my favourite shows this year. Great fun.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
Always good bargains for book lovers here.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
4K coming out here in October. A huge favourite of mine but I’ll wait for the reviews before upgrading. Great to see old movies like this getting the 4K treatment, I just wish we’d see some Michael Powell movies released on it.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
Very talky but there’s some terrific, striking camera work in it that surprised me.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
A cheesy but fun western. #nowwatching

Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
This thing makes Jack Bauer in 24 look like an Errol Morris true crime documentary it’s so ridiculous but if you can stop your eyeballs from spinning it’s pretty entertaining and, sometimes, that’s all I want. Stupid as fuck though.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
I was gifted this 4K. Haven’t seen the film since its release but it feels like it could be a Saturday night kind of flick. #nowwatching
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
Hmmm…a couple of raves but mostly fair to middling reviews for Del Toros Frankenstein. I was hoping for better even though I find him a frustratingly uneven filmmaker.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
I’ve seen them both but remember very little apart from his Oirish accent in The Nightcomers. He’s only in Dry White Season for a few minutes if I remember rightly.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
Well, yeah, there is that
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
I read one review calling it Brandos spaghetti western so that’s made me interested. John Saxon is in it too so could be fun.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah I like it too, might watch it over the weekend. A western of his that I haven’t seen is The Appaloosa so I’ll give that a watch too.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
I love Marlon Brando but he made lots of movies I’ve never seen so I’m trying to fill a few gaps. #nowwatching
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
Looks like the BFI will be releasing a 5 film boxset of Frederick Wiseman's documentaries next January. I'm embarrassed to say I've never seen any of his work but I know it's held in very high regard.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah I haven’t done 3 in a row in years but the timings aligned perfectly so it was hard to say no.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
I don’t know if there’s a new sound mix with this release but I swear I heard things I’ve never heard before (or it could be just my old man brain) and the end credits scene of Brody and Hooper swimming back to shore was clearer than I’ve ever seen. As close to a perfect film as I can imagine.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
Enjoyed this a lot more than I was expecting although I feel it’s being slightly mis-sold as a wacky comedy. The leads are terrific and there’s a surprising amount of tenderness alongside the laughs. Good.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
Thought this was fairly decent even though it’s a bit all over the place trying to balance comedy and tragedy. It gave me that uneasy feeling I got from films like After Hours or Uncut Gems where so much bad stuff happens to the main character you become really invested in seeing them pull through.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
In a bizarre twist that no one saw coming Pierce Brosnan’s London accent in The Thursday Murder Club is actually a better Dublin accent than anything Pierce has previously attempted.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
Ha! I remember loving The Eiger Sanction. Years since I last watched it though tbf
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
Ah sorry to hear that. Very hard to lose such a great pal. My condolences.

Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
A typical, bland, inoffensive entry into the swords and sorcery genre. Not terrible but not very good, just kind of forgettable like a lot of these films are.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
I can’t stand people judging films based on something bad happening in the story. They can fuck right off.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
Great. I’m going to Cineworld tomorrow, I’ll be sure to ask for a large bag of hoshi imo. Thanks for the tip. One question - do I need to bring my own soundless cotton sack?
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh I don’t give a fuck either but I seem to remember someone claiming it was degrading to women (or something similar) and all the usual suspects immediately dropping it like a hot potato.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
Wasn’t this put on the Twitter “how dare you like that?” list a few years ago.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
Watching this. It’s pretty awful so far yet somehow it’s still better than I was expecting. Some of the actor’s voices are pure “terribly dubbed movie shown at 1am on ITV in the late 80s” levels of terrible.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
*me yesterday watching the news* I love these sweet stories about kids starting school *me today* Yeah, enough of this shite
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, last time I used them it was €15 and I wasn’t charged anything extra as it was a book that I’d ordered. Stupidly ordered a single 4K and the AddressPal charges were more than the disc! Oh well, you live and you learn.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
The train station
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
Jaysus that AddressPal service really sticks it to the customer. €20 postage from the USA but they stick 23% VAT on top AND (the real kick in the balls) €5 admin fee for opening it up so they can charge you the VAT. Not their fault tbh but I probably wouldn’t use them again.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
I’d swear I saw Gordon Ramsey behind the deli counter in SuperValu today but it was just a very old tired looking woman.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
I’m not a fan of movies being presented on physical media in a choice of aspect ratios. Just give us the one the director intended - that’s fine! I realise that’s not always possible for various reasons but don’t leave the choice to us poor slobs. We don’t know wtf we’re talking about half the time.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
This ad skips the part where you get a 5 second warning to get to the bathroom before you destroy yourself. What’s that? Personal experience? Sorry I have to take this call.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
Yep this is absolutely harmless. The cast are good but Brosnan just looks way too healthy (mentally and physically) to be in an old folks home - and what an old folks home it is!, for a second I thought I was watching the new Downton Abbey movie. Features every single living English actor over 70.

For all the people who asked me who Michael Shannon was over the last few weeks - he’s got 241 acting credits on IMDb, like make an effort people!
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
Ooh the new 4K restoration of The Curse of Frankenstein is screening in cinemas around Ireland on Oct 2nd. An extremely rare chance to see a classic Hammer horror film on the big screen. Alongside Movies@ cinemas in Dublin it’s also showing in -

What? Either you’ve left out a few words there or you’re crazy. I’m an optimist so I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
Watching Alien: Earth and I just couldn’t give a shit about any of it. This year’s biggest TV disappointment.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social)
Not Michael Shannon losing the Dublin crowd by saying “this is the final show of our UK tour” 🙄 They were soon back on his side but I couldn’t help feeling I was funding someone’s hobby. It was grand.
Tom (@baloobas.bsky.social) reply parent
Worth sticking in a pre-order at that price anyway. You can always cancel once the specs are announced.
