Short fiction writers with collections published/forthcoming: Would you share your publisher’s name to help the rest of us find one? Best if they charge no reading fees, but if they do, maybe share what writers get in return? (Quick response, great feedback, high royalties, etc)

People are melting down at a Tribune article about CHSD 230 considering adding Arabic to its language learning electives. I wasted time in the comments, which I normally avoid doing since it's useless and awful, but it led to possibly the funniest thing anybody's ever said to me about France.

The problem isn’t refugees on boats. The problem is oligarchs hoarding obscene amounts of wealth while most people fight to stay afloat. Wages aren't tied to inflation, so the working class keeps falling behind no matter how hard they work.

So many plots don’t work now. Covid, cellphones, Google, street cameras—all fundamentally changed the human experience. Not to mention the performance aspect that now accompanies living. We live in a time of indiscriminate knowledge, where every answer is too easy, and laced with manipulation.

Smoke and flannel and fumbling toward something intimate and grand, all tinged with the naive hope that things would perpetually bend toward the better. It was dark and raw and strangely innocent in comparison to the lights-always-on world we have now.

Indeed. I feel this. There is something clean about that period.
Barlow Adams (@barlowadams.bsky.social) reply parent
I agree with this. The process is the “point.” The love of it is the “point.” The little connections, the moments of being part of something bigger than yourself, and the moments of it being just you holding this fragile egg world of your own ridiculous ideas and loving it and letting it be loved.

That’s interesting. The thing I love about subversion and stories with children is that it often feels somehow wrong but also inherently delightful, but the child doesn’t know what response is being stimulated. Children often learn about stories through genre and archetype, so it’s a lot of fun.
