Im not sure that's really true. Sci-fi and fantasy fandoms have always had significant female presence, despite attempts to drive them out/ deny them. This is especially true you widen the debate to horror (and then argue where horror overlaps with fantasy). 50 years of lestat fanfic is the proof.
