Oh yes, it was very much a wider late 90s/2000s thing (and as you said also a very online thing- in a flame war the first petson to care lost), but Southpark did it so well it has far more ongoing cultural impact almost 3 decades later.

Maybe this could actually explain to some degree the waning of The Simpsons in the noughties, which - despite George Bush railing against its lack of family values - was never nearly as nihilistic.
