The insanity of being a fire ecologist in the epicenter of a major fire event, bags packed and ready to evacuate, watching active fire from my window, while taking media requests and explaining to the public, for the 100,000th time how climate change is largely responsible for this

Beyond unbelievable. The world is literally burning in three fires around us, we're in a state of emergency, major events are being canceled left and right, and the email is just an outright denial of danger while flames are visible and everyone breathes ash. I moved my class online.

“Will pay any amount.” Feels like one of those futile pleas we’re going to hear from wealthy people more and more in the era of climate change.

An OC Register article lists 2024 restaurant closures around the county, but misses a big one: Old Vine Kitchen & Bar (aka Old Vine Cafe 2007-2019). I was behind the scenes at Old Vine for 13 years and if you were part of our community, then you know what a loss this was for Costa Mesa. ❤️

As always, spend your dollars with small businesses, especially restaurants. It's rough out there. Patronize them, become regulars if you can, and spread the word. And if you see this kind of Karen review BS, tell them you saw it and that's why you're here -- so that you can support them even more.

And here's the thing, self-righteous "reviews" like that, whether on NextDoor or Yelp, can be detrimental to small businesses. I was with a small restaurant for years and saw first-hand how any minor issue or even perceived slight could unfurl into a tale of epic proportions for all to read.

I'd been there a dozen times since they opened and always enjoy talking with the owner who runs the front and takes the orders -- great spot, friendly service, good vibes. As I stood at the front this morning, I seethed picturing the Karen who threw a plate of food on the floor.

Several people pushed back and stood up for the place, which only goes so far on NextDoor. Many of us took another route and I know I'm not the only one who saw this woman's post and immediately went in to spend my dollars at their restaurant.

On NextDoor, dozens of people then piled on to "thank" this person for "warning" them about this place and then vowing in true NextDoor fashion to never set foot in this establishment and announcing they'd spend their money elsewhere. All this online posturing based on this one woman's rant.

Made the mistake of logging into NextDoor and someone was trashing a small POC-owned restaurant. The person claimed she was mistreated, the place wouldn't accommodate her modifications, and then admitted she threw a plate of food on the floor and yelled at the owner to clean it up. “They’re starving undergraduate enrollment in our courses,” said Dr. Rainwater, the sociology professor. “The worry is they’ll then be able to take away whole programs and justify it by saying courses aren’t filling up.” www.nytimes.com/2024/11/21/u...

This is a terrifying article, and it shows what’s at stake in silencing academic dissent/attacking academic freedom. #commsky #AcademicSky www.austinchronicle.com/news/2024-11...

And I’ll add to read the lyrics of so many albums brimming with resistance.

We need to talk more about the emotional labor of qualitative research, especially when writing about heavy or personal topics. Coding a new round of interviews about targeted harassment of faculty by the public and my soul feels tied wanting to hold these people and their stories. #academicsky

Another 5:00 update for the U.S. House 45th District race: Derek Tran (D) now leads Michelle Steel (R) by 480 votes. Again, huge for those of us in Orange County.

After the 2016 election I wrote an essay for the OC Weekly (RIP) in which I feared that Trump and Pence were "co-pilots for a ride through reproductive rights hell." Building up my energy to keep fighting back for those of us who made it through the first time and especially for those who didn't.

My facebook memories of this week from 2016 are full of essays and other writing I did for YES! Magazine and the beloved OC Weekly about how to resist Trump. If that's not a sign to get back to public writing, I don't know what is.

Just checked this out from the library with a knowing look from the librarian. As someone who’s biracial and grew up seeing so few Filipinos in the media or popular culture, Maria Ressa is the Fil-Am hero I’m so grateful to have as an adult.

Deeply unsettled by confirmation of plans to use the US military for mass deportation, and equally unsettled by the crickets among everyone from pundits to people in positions of political power. I saw an ACLU lawsuit and condemnations from orgs and that's... it? Am I missing a leader who spoke out?
