There are modern parallels: a book I read did a statistical comparison of the Warsaw Pact countries that had major rebellions and those that did not, and it very much refuted the "just keep your head down and don't make them angry" strategy, what worked best was the opposite.

Need more like my instructor from a decade or so ago. College level class, she said you're never going to remember all this stuff, but you do need to know how to *find* the info you need. Every test was open-book. I used those post-it tabs in my book at one point and she loved the idea.
